SERENA

Serena was reminded of all the times she and May used to play in make-built pillow forts in their childhood. As she sat huddled with the two brothers under the pergola and in a corner.

"Sooo, what are we gonna do now?" Calem asked, scratching the back of his neck. He looked back and forth between the other two.

"I don't know. Why don't you surprise Mom like you surprised me?" Ash shrugged. His voice went down a notch. "Although it shocked me more than it surprised me."

"You want me killed?" Calem looked at him disbelievingly. "I thought we were good."

"How about a phone call?" Serena suggested, her brain failing her at the moment. "Maybe you can call her before meeting her. Like giving a heads-up before the, you know, shock?"

"I cannot see that ending well" The grey-eyed man groaned. "I think I should go back for the time being."

"You are not going anywhere" Ash said quickly, his voice firm. "Not when we are this close."

"Are we going to face her together?"

"Do I look like I have lost my mind?" Ash stared at him incredulously. "You are on your own."

"You are not being very helpful, Ash" Calem scowled.

"I don't want to be shipped off to Greenland."

"Whatev - wait, you got shipped off to Greenland?"

"Guys, we are getting distracted" Serena sighed, interrupting them. She looked at them with a frown. "Isn't the best option is to ask for her forgiveness directly?"

Calem and Ash exchanged glances. Then the grey-eyed man spoke hesitantly. "Well, that can be done. But our mother is -"

He stopped, struggling to find the right words to describe his mother without insulting her.

"A bit problematic" Ash finished his sentence for him. Then he thought over and added. "And dramatic."

"So what do we do then?" Serena asked, feeling stupid. They were back to square one.

"Maybe cool off our heads for sometime before we can think properly again" Calem replied, stuffing his face with the cake. "This is delicious. Did you bake it by yourself, Serena?"

"He is right" Ash said, rubbing his throbbing temples. He gave a pointed glare to Calem. "All this mess because of you."

"What the fuck?"
