SERENA

"You can keep this box" Palermo said after Serena had stopped crying, the quaver in her voice almost unnoticeable. The honey blonde looked at the box with puffy red eyes.

"I can?"

"It belongs to its rightful owner." The older woman pushed it towards the sapphire-eyed woman, determination behind that little push that only Serena could see.

"Palermo" Serena let out a grateful breath. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

"You don't have to thank me" Palermo said briskly. "After all that I have done to you, the only thing I hope to hear is your forgiveness. You don't have to forgive me, of course, but I want you to know that I regret it all."

Serena's eyes teared again as she wiped them away with her sleeve. She nodded slowly as she accepted the grey-haired woman's apology.

A small smile blossomed on the older woman's face. She stood up, her eyes fixed on the honey blonde. "I am grateful, Serena. I know that I am not in a position to ask for anything but will you do something for me?"

"Okay" Serena nodded.

"You can't agree without hearing it out first, child" Palermo joked lightly. The brief spark in her eyes dimmed. "I want you to promise me that you will never contact me again."

Serena's heart pounded in her ears as she heard the words of the old woman. "What?"

"It's just as I have said" Palermo looked out at the tree listlessly and Serena wondered if the tree reminded her of Grace in a way. "I don't have much time left, you see. And I want to spend my last remaining days in peace."

"What are you saying, Palermo . . .?" A strange feeling suffocated the honey blonde. "Are you -"

"Yes, I am dying" Palermo nodded, her face betraying the resignation on it. But there was something else; a peacefulness to the very fact that she was dying.

"I" Serena started, her voice cracking. "I am sure we can do something about this. I am sure we can find a way -"

"There is nothing that can be done, child" Palermo said soothingly. "And I have seen enough in my life to be satisfied with it."

Tears sprung up at the corner of Serena's eyes as she tried to stifle them.

"So will you promise me?" Palermo said, taking Serena's hands in wrinkled ones. Her eyes looked so soft. The honey blonde wanted to break down in tears. "Please, Serena. This is the last wish of mine."
