It was a rainy evening, the kind that brought a chill to the air and an almost tangible sense of melancholy to the world around you. You sat alone in your small apartment, wrapped in a blanket, hugging your knees to your chest. The scent of damp earth lingered outside, seeping through the window. It matched the heaviness in your heart.
The breakup had hit you harder than you’d expected. One moment, everything felt stable, and the next, the person you thought you'd build a future with was slipping away. You'd tried to understand, to find closure, but sometimes the reasons people leave remain lost in silence.
The soft chiming of your phone disrupted the quiet, pulling you from your thoughts. It was a message from Shinji Hirako—your best friend, your confidant, the one person who always seemed to understand when things got complicated.
> “Hey, I’m outside. Need to talk.”
A sigh escaped your lips. You didn’t even have to wonder why he was there. Shinji always showed up when you were hurting. Maybe it was because he knew all too well what it felt like to lose something important.
You slowly pushed yourself up, wiping the tear stains from your cheeks as you padded barefoot to the door. When you opened it, Shinji stood there, his hands stuffed in his pockets, his usual carefree smile softened with concern. The rain clung to his hair, dripping down his face, but it didn’t seem to bother him.
"You look like you’ve been through a storm," Shinji said, his voice light but tinged with a gentle sincerity.
You chuckled, though it was laced with sadness. "Funny, I was thinking the same about myself."
He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, a small gesture of comfort that felt like a safe space. The warmth of his presence was always grounding, especially now. You led him to the couch, where you both sat in silence for a moment, the weight of your heartbreak hanging between you.
Shinji was quiet, allowing you the space to speak if you wanted to. You didn't. Not yet.
After a few minutes, he spoke again, softer this time. "You wanna talk about it?" His eyes met yours, a gentle but unyielding warmth in them. "I know it's not easy. Breakups never are."
You nodded, pulling your knees closer to your chest. "I don’t even know why it hurts so much," you said, your voice breaking. "I thought I was fine, you know? That it would get easier. But... now I just feel lost."
Shinji’s gaze softened, and for a moment, he didn’t speak. His eyes were distant, like he was thinking about something from his own past. Something he’d never fully shared with you, but that didn’t matter. You knew he understood more than anyone else could.
After a beat, he reached over and placed a hand on yours. The simple gesture felt grounding, as if he was silently telling you that it was okay to feel everything you were feeling.
"You know, I’ve been through something similar," he said, his voice steady. "It doesn’t get easier right away. But you’ll find your way back. You’re not as lost as you think."
The words were soft but confident, the kind of reassurance that made you feel like maybe—just maybe—there was hope. But your mind still struggled to fully let go of the sadness.
"Do you ever stop hurting?" you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
Shinji exhaled, looking down at your hands. "Not all at once. But you learn how to carry it with you, instead of letting it bury you."
You felt a lump form in your throat, the raw honesty in his words reaching deep inside you. Shinji didn’t offer empty platitudes, and somehow, that made his comfort feel more genuine. He wasn’t trying to fix you—he was simply there, letting you exist as you were.
After a while, Shinji stood up, walking toward the window. He glanced outside, the rain still falling steadily. The quiet was almost suffocating.
"Let’s go for a walk," he suggested, his usual playful grin returning, though it held an undercurrent of tenderness. "It’ll clear your mind. The world’s still out there, waiting for you to reclaim it."
You hesitated for a moment, the idea of leaving the comfort of your apartment feeling overwhelming. But Shinji’s quiet insistence, the way he’d always been able to pull you from the darkest moments, convinced you.
"Okay," you said softly, standing up and walking toward the door with him.
As you stepped outside, the rain falling lightly on your skin, Shinji nudged your shoulder lightly. "One step at a time. You’ll figure it out."
And even though you didn’t have all the answers, the way he said it made you feel like maybe you didn’t need to. For the first time that day, you found the strength to smile, even if just a little.
Because with Shinji by your side, you weren’t really alone.
