Noah glared. "How could you be so calm right now?
Elijah's phone rang in his favor, vibrating on the table beneath the shadow of Noah's hovering figure. Without breaking their eye contact, Elijah picked up the phone in front of him.
"I thought you'd call sometime this morning." Elijah put his phone beside his ear with one hand and folded the other. "Did you see the news?"
---
"See the news? No. No, Elijah." A young man in a grey suit, standing in front of a tall blackwood door to a certain office, speaking through his phone in a low, agitated voice. "Why the news when my own father had the courtesy to invite me to his brand new office, huh?"
"---What's up with it, Percy? You sound mad."
"I am mad."
"---That your daddy's company now owns the assets of the largest real estate company in the continent?"
"That you'd listen to my dad and burn your own fucking house, you stupid fuck." He groaned, putting his palm over his face, sliding it down to his mouth. "And I'd appreciate it if you call me anything other than my father's name with a 'Y ' '."
"---...That place isn't my house, and they aren't my family. You should be well aware of that by now, Phineas." Elijah's tone lowered.
"I wouldn't understand your way of thinking even if I tried," Phineas glanced over at the employees passing by, startled by his sudden awareness of their attention. "forget that, you know I'm just concerned about you. How did you even manage to pull that off---"
---
"Glad to have your concern," Elijah looked up, a somewhat mocking smile. "---but somebody here seems a little more concerned than you. I'll call you back." Elijah hung up the call. Noah's eyes narrowed.
"I thought you said you don't meet guys?"
"I said I didn't have guys over, he could've easily taken me over to his."
"---I'm not in the mood to joke."
"Does it sound like I'm joking?"
"What other business do you have with Phineas Percival?"
"---What do you mean, 'Other business'? He's my godfather's son, you think I wouldn't have hooked up with him a couple of times?"
Noah scoffed, lifting his head in disbelief.
"What the actual fuck happened to you during these two years, Eli? You've changed too much for me to comprehend. What did the Beaumonts put you up to this whole time? What in hell would convince you to make a living off killing people on Percival's command? You know how easily that could get you killed?"
"If it wasn't for Sir Percival, my family would've gotten me killed." Elijah blurted. "My mother and my older brothers tried every darn way to kill me in that house. Every plate that was served for me in that house was drugged, they would hire somebody to snipe me through the window at night, they put chemicals in my bath water, they bribed my trusted driver to kidnap me and drop me off into a fucking lake. With whose help do you think I could've gone into hiding? You weren't even there, don't tell me how to not to get myself killed."
Noah felt a sinking feeling in his stomach from the last sentence. "Elijah-"
Elijah's phone rang again. A different, significant ringtone. This time, the screen was facing upwards, revealing the name of the caller even to Noah. Elijah grabbed the phone to decline the call, but proceeded to drag back his seat. He stood up. "I have to go to my father's old office, Percival called for me."
