The clinking of glasses, the raucous laughter, and the stench of cheap perfume permeated the air as I lay in my tiny bed in the backroom of my mother's brothel. In simple terms, a prostitute home. It was late, but I was used to the constant buzz of activity, having grown up in this world.

At seven years old, I already knew how to sneak around quietly, avoiding the stumbling men as they made their way through the hallway. The white powdery thing that always seemed to be on the table...I always suspected it was drugs, my mom would just say it was powder. Well, I was smarter than she knew. The constant moaning sounds of the girls that worked for my mom. Didn't really seem to disturb me...all I did every time was  listen to music NON-STOP!

I had seen a lot for a kid my age. One night, I snuck out of my room, tiptoeing down the hallway toward the main area of the brothel. The dim lights and the thick haze of cigarette smoke made it hard to see, but I could hear moaning sounds.

I pressed myself against the wall, hoping not to be noticed, as a man stumbled past me. I followed him with my eyes, watching as he disappeared into a room with one of the women.

I reached the door of which the sounds were coming from and peaked through a tiny hole. The man. On top of the lady. Thrusting in and out, back and fourth of her. Sex. I didn't fully understand it, but I knew  a few things about it.

I scurried back to my room, shutting the door and pressing my ear against it. I could still hear the voices, the laughter, the clinking of glasses. It was like a never-ending party, but one that I didn't want to be part of.

I rummaged through my drawer, searching for the  old pair of earphones. They were a gift from a client of my mother's, who had felt sorry for me when he saw me huddled in the corner of the room.

I put the earphones on, adjusting the volume just loud enough to drown out the sounds of horny men and women. As the music played in my ears, I closed my eyes and allowed myself to drift off into a peaceful slumber.

THAT WAS HOW I'D FALL ASLEEP.
