Tom Hanson took a deep breath. This morning he discovered something a bit shocking- he had been going study with his partner, both in life and work, but he didn't expect to take such a major step so fast. Fast for him at least.
He made his way up the steps to the chapel, then into Fuller's office. Doug would meet him there soon to go over their current case with their captain, Fuller. Doug showed up second.
"Doug, can I talk with you?" Tom turned in the chair, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. He tried to smile to hide how nervous he was. Doug raised a brow. It was Tom's strange tone that made him slightly worried. "Ehh sure, of course, Tom, whatever."
"I'm about to tell you something that... you might need to sit down for." Tom bit his lip, and starts swiveling the seat about. Doug sat, his curiosity biting at him. "What the heck is it?"
Tom opened his mouth to reply but then Doug interrupts, "Wait wait, is it somethin' bad? Do you have good news first? Okay, bad news and then good news. No- good news and then bad!"
"Doug! Just listen." Tom exclaimed, laughing. He started playing with a pen, realized, then put it back neatly in its place. "I've got a big surprise for you,"
"Okay, okay so spit it out!!! I'm on the edge of my seat here." Tom bit his lip, trying to contain his huge grin. "I'm pregnant!!!" Doug's jaw dropped and his eyes bulged out of his head. He stuttered, "you-you're- w-what?!" He stood up, looking Tom intensely in the eyes. There was a moment of silence where he just stared. "You are?!" Tom stood up too, came around the desk and nodded. "Uh-huh! I took a test this morning..." Doug's look of shock dissipated and he smiled 3 miles. He exclaimed, and lifted Tom up. "Woah! Hey!"
Tom was laughing, his hands on Doug's shoulders, patting them. "Put me down!"
"Tommy, this is great!" Doug set his partner down then hugged him. "We're gonna be parents! We're gonna have our own kiddo!!! WOW!..." Suddenly the reality set in. "Uh..."
"Is something the matter, Doug?" Doug looked like he felt bad. "It's just- what do I know about bringing up a kid? This is so sudden-"
"Doug, don't be like that. I mean... sure, you're a slob and you kind of still act like a dumb kid yourself, and you.... oh my god, you're right," Tom took a breath. Doug was discouraged. Tom turned to him with a kind smile. "Doug, don't worry. You'll be a great dad. You know why?" Fuller came in. "Oh, there you two are. I didn't know you were already waiting in my office. He fixes the pencil on his desk and sits down in his chair. He puts his hands together, and looks at Tom and Doug who are still facing each other. Tom removes his hands from the sides of Doug's arms, and they both slowly sit down to face the captain. "Is... something the matter, gentlemen?"
"No, no, uh, we were just," They babbled over each other stupidly, "No! Nothing the matter here- he- I- we- yeah, we were just-- ... talking." Fuller raised an eyebrow at their awkward parade of words. "Okay then. Not conspicuous at all." Doug felt beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He could barely focus on a word Fuller said. He side-eyed Tom who was sitting to his right, and his eyes lowered to his stomach, where a fetus currently resided... planted there by him.
Tom found it hard to concentrate as well, so took out his trusty notepad and jotted the things Fuller said down. "Are you boys sure you're alright? You seem distracted. Especially you, Penhall." Doug gasped a little when he was accused of being suspicious. Both Tom and Fuller were looking at him now. "What!!! I'm not distracted. I'm just- hot. And sweaty." Tom put a hand on his face, mostly covering his mouth. "Okay." Fuller finished talking to them and they left. What had been said about the case might as well have gone completely over their heads, if not for Tom's notepad.
Later that day Doug appeared outside Tom's apartment door. It was almost 9 at night." Doug? What are you doing here so late?" Tom was holding his blue robe closed. "I couldn't sleep and,... and I wanted to talk to you. About maybe... movin' in with me?" Doug's eyes were sincere. He looked like a puppy. Tom furrowed his brows. "Moving in with you?! No, that's not going to happen... I like my place!"
"So you don't want to be together for the baby? You... you don't wanna be with me?"
"That isn't what I'm saying... of course I want that Doug... this is just a lot to process right now, and it's late."
"Maybe I could stay the night. Where will we put the crib?" Tom opened the door more and moved back to let Doug inside. "I... guess it could go in my office. Look, Doug, I'm not feeling up to all this planning stuff right now...."
"We have to be ready, don't we? Let me help you move some of this stuff out!" Tom grabbed Doug's arm. "Doug, relax! The baby won't be here for 7 more months! I have neighbors downstairs. You can't move furniture right now. Here, just... let's sit." They sat on the couch and Doug stared at Tom lovingly, his hand on Tom's leg. Tom was just in his robe and some underwear. He put his hand on top of Doug's .
"Don't get all freaked out and crazy over this on me, Doug. We have to stay level-headed, okay? I know neither one of us were expecting this, but it's going to be okay..." Tom felt funny reassuring Doug, when he was the one who was pregnant and actually very fearful inside. Doug had expressed wanting to start a family before, and he was always excited talking about being a dad. Tom thought the same, that it'd happen someday but he thought this day would have come around in his late 20s.
"I know that it's going to be okay..." Doug put his head on Tom's shoulder, leaning into him. Tom put his arm behind Doug and is playing with his hair. "I just... want to be SURE I'm ready. I want to be the best dad. I don't wanna be no low-life, who isn't present in his kid's life... I don't wanna be no dead-beat dad." Doug thought of his own parents. "Doug... how in the world would you end up being any of those things?" Tom looked down at him with a tired, genuine smile. Doug was confused by this question and waited for Tom to go on, "... You care too much!" Doug smiled. "I do, I do care a lot." they both sighed and settled more into the couch. Tom put his legs up in front of him on his coffee table, and Doug lied down with his head on Tom's lap. Tom continued messing with his hair. "You gotta shave that beard." "Very funny, Tommy..." Doug closed his eyes. He had to think. He turned onto his back, and was looking straight up at Tom now, who looked very tired. He looked at Tom's stomach, which was flat still. He put his hand out and poked it gently. "I just want to be there for this kid. You won't push me away, will you?"
"Doug, please. I'm too tired to play your clingy games. I already told you how much I love you... just because I don't want to move in with you right away doesn't mean I don't want you in the baby's life." Tom stifled a yawn. He put a hand on top of Doug's again, and they both felt his abdomen. "If I'm gonna be changing diapers, you're gonna be changing diapers." He joked, making Doug feel better. "Right." It was quiet for a moment, and Doug's eyes marveled at the touch of Tom's belly. He couldn't believe they created a life in there. Tom's hand moved away from his stomach, while Doug rubbed it in soothing circles. Tom's eyes were closed.
"That feels nice..." he was basically nodding off. Doug continued smiling, and he whispered in a cheery tone, "hey little guy... or girl." Tom's robe was opening in the front, so Doug could see that his stomach was already sticking out, just a little bit. It was the cutest thing Doug ever saw. "You're showing already!" Doug exclaimed, making Tom jerk back awake. "Wh- huh? Oh." Tom looked down at Doug's excited face and his little belly. "Yeah, just a little." his face was slightly flushed. "It's the most precious thing." Doug commented, making Tom chuckle lightly. He leaned down, his hair falling into his face, and planted a kiss on Doug's forehead. "I think I'm gonna go to bed...."Doug sat up and out of Tom's way so he could stand. Tom stretched, then opened his arms for a hug. They exchanged one, sloppy on Tom's end, as he was so sleepy.
"'Night Doug." he started to turn around and walk away. "Wait!"Doug made him pause. "... Do I have to stay on the couch?" He made pleading eyes with Tom. Tom looked like he was thinking about it. He sighed. "Fine, come back to the bed with me. Ah! Not an invite to get handsy." Doug got giddy and followed Tom down the hallway. They got in bed and he held Tom from behind.
