Chapter Three:

Y/N's POV:

The ticking of the clock on the wall caused my mind to full register the passing of time, It had been almost twelve hours since they had left on the mission and they still hadn't returned. It was unusual that any mission of theirs would take this long unless it was incredibly complicated or a serious threat, which I was starting to worry it was.

Pepper had fallen asleep a few hours ago. It was currently only ten o'clock at night but she seemed exhausted so after it became clear that The Avengers wouldn't be back for dinner she had gone to bed. By now the disappointment of missing out on the dinner had subsided into a dull sensation in the back of my mind, it still hurt somewhat but not as much as it had when they originally left. It was all apart of being the daughter of a superhero, always having to give up my plans in order for them to go and save the world. And despite seeing the good that my dad was doing for the world, saving innocent peoples lives, I couldn't help but feel a sense of crushing loneliness and disappointment whenever he would leave.

The glare of the TV screen had begun hurting my eyes hours ago but I couldn't pull my eyes away from it, too entranced by the movie I had picked to watch before going to bed. Sense and sensibility was by far one of my favorite comfort films, and was what my dad deemed a confusing yet entertaining train wreck.

My head had already begun lulling itself as I attempted to fight off sleep, the movie was almost over and I wanted to witness the part where Colonel Brandon saves Marianne as she runs off into the rain. If I remembered the course of the movie correctly that was only fifteen minutes away, but the task of staying up those fifteen minutes seemed impossible.

I moved from my upright position to a more comfortable lying position on the couch, if I fell asleep on the couch it wouldn't be that big of a deal. As my head hit the unbelievably soft throw pillows I felt the drowsiness overcome my body, my eyes closing slowly as I drifted off with the movie still playing in the background.

============

The harsh sound of glass breaking caused me to stir on the couch. Taking a quick glance at the TV, which by now had begun showing the home screen, I gathered that it had to have been more than an hour since I fell asleep. But the darkness and moonlight that flooded through the windows around the tower meant that it had not been a drastically long stretch of time.

Taking a moment to let my eyes become accustomed to the darkness around me I slowly lifted my head off of the throw pillow, taking note of the pain in my neck from falling asleep on the couch. The silence that had engulfed the room after the shattering of the window was deafening, and I wondered what could have caused the strange noise.

Perhaps the avengers were back and, not wanting to wake either Pepper or I up, kept the lights off and had to stumble their way through the tower. But the more I theorized the more I realized that it would be a near impossible occurrence. The Avengers, even the human members of the team, seemed to have heightened senses that would prevent them from making small mistakes such as shattering a glass vase.

But the shattering of a vase couldn't have been loud enough to wake me up could it?

I squinted my eyes making an attempt to see through the darkness to make my way to one of the many light switches, if I could see clearly then it would certainly be easier to figure out where the noise had come from. Placing my hands down on the couch cushions beneath me I slowly pushed myself off of the couch, making sure not to bump into the coffee table that I had moved closer to the couch during the movie marathon.

Once I had stood up I began feeling my way towards the lamp on one of the side tables, deciding that it was a safer journey than making my way through the dark to the light switch on the wall.
