Another boring day, guarding Prince
Alaric's room. At least three different eager maids have gone in there to wake him up and help him with the simplest things. I swear, that man is treated like a child and adores it. He'll never be independent, let alone king.

I yawned as I stared out the window across the hallway, the morning sun blinding me slightly. My armor shined many hues of orange and yellow because of the sunlight, my sword doing the same. I wished to be out there, sitting in a field, relaxing. Feeling the warm touch of the sun on my skin.

Unfortunately those thoughts were rudely interrupted by Prince Alaric opening the door a little too forcefully, hitting me in my left side. I had the urge to hit him back, but I'd most likely get executed for that, and I want to keep my head. He simply sent me a snarky smirk before walking away, maids in tow with hearts in their eyes. What do they see in him? He's a jerk. To me at least.

I straightened myself out, adjusting my shifted breastplate. I sighed and followed, trying to push my way to him through the line of girls. I hate it, but it's my job to protect him. Once I finally got to the front, he chuckled.

"Sloppy with your work again, aren't you?" he looked down at me, though I was only a few inches shorter than him. It was clear he was trying not to call me a slur.

"Says you. You have no clue how to do your job, you can't lead," I retorted back.

He glared at me for that, but I really didn't care.

"You have no right to say that to me, *lesbian.*"

"Bisexual," I corrected.

He scoffed and rolled his eyes.

"You like men and women, still homosexual."

"Ah yes, liking men as a woman is gay. Good to know."

I simply ignored him, as I did almost everyday. This isn't the first time he's brought up my sexuality in order to win an argument. I never let it get to me. I never let him get to me. As he kept talking and saying slurs and cusses, we made it to the dining room where his parents were. He immediately changed and put on the "nice guy" persona he's known for. I guess I'm the only one who never gets to see it.

He respectfully bowed to his parents before sitting down to eat. His parents smiled at both of us, I simply stood near making sure nothing happened to any of them. I've always liked his parents, I'm still confused on how someone like him could come from people like them. It's a mystery.

------------

After breakfast, I was finally able to go outside. I took in the fresh air, the smell of dewy grass and flowers, and the sound of the nearby river. Again, rudely interrupted, not by Alaric this time, but by the gardeners being annoying. They're supposed to be working, but instead they are goofing off and making a ruckus.

I walked over to see what was going on this time, and I saw one of the best gardeners doing everything but his job. That made both me and his boss, Ianna, who stood nearby, infuriated. She stepped forward and yelled at him and the rest of them.

"Quit being immature and get to work! We have to get these flower beds ready for Princess Grace of the East Kingdom. We want to make a good impression on her for Prince Alaric."

I nodded to her as she spoke, and she gave me a curt nod back. I've always liked her. She's like me: rude and petty. We spend a lot of time talking, and don't tell her boyfriend, but we may or may not have had an affair. But I mean could you blame me? She's got long black hair, beautiful, chocolate brown eyes, sharp features, and the most soothing voice. It's just like honey, slow moving and sweet. And her attitude really gets me going. I don't think I'd ever want to date her, but I can see the appeal.

I turned and walked away, going back inside to work, and the moment I did, I hear someone yell.

"ARTEMIS!"

I looked around only to find Prince Alaric walking towards me. Looking as angry and as ugly as ever.

"What the hell are you doing out here and not with me?" he snapped.

"I have my right to a small break. I was only gone for three minutes, calm yourself."

"Anything could've happened in three minutes. To me or to my parents, and you decided that it's more important to watch Ianna than to DO YOUR JOB!"

I wanted to slap him. I was doing my job, I just wanted to relax. Plus I was outside and close to the castle, nothing would get past me or the other guards assigned out here. I swear, he doesn't have any common sense, and yet he's gonna be king. I'm not sure how anyone else isn't as worried as I am for his marriage and his take over of the throne. Though I hear the girl he's marrying is very down to earth and responsible, maybe she'll keep him in check. I really hope she does. Or she'll be just like him, having a cover up for her nasty side. Oh well, it's nothing new. At least for me, and only me.
