Luz woke with a start, she quickly sat up from the cold ground and took in her surroundings, and just like most of her mornings, she had no clue where she was, all she could see was trees, bushes, and her dried blood from earlier in the night everywhere.
she tried to stand up only to instantly hit the dirt, a headache slammed into her like a semi and made it near impossible for her to stand, let alone walk, but she was no stranger to this kind of pain and she struggled to her feet and walked along anyway.
Most people would have panicked and started running by now, but Luz wasn't most people, for the last six months she had been hunted by a mysterious beast that dragged her out of bed and dropped her deep in some forest once a month without fail, she didn't know why this creature hunted her, or never killed her, or why she could never remember being taken or what it looked like, but she did have good reason to think it was a werewolf.
number one, it only ever happened on the night of the full moon, number two, she often had bite marks and scratches on her arms and legs, and number three, she could distinctly remember howling one of the nights she was taken.
she started her trek back home through a trail marked by broken bushes and occasional trees with deep scratch marks and assessed the damage on her body, she could feel a gash on her forehead that had blood crusted over it and some smaller surface scrapes across her cheeks, her forearms and shoulders were littered with small scratches and the occasional bite mark, they only added to her already large collection of scars but she didn't mind
knowing this night was coming she had a little supply bag with bandages and granola bars in it so she pulled them out and started wrapping and soon realized she didn't have enough bandages for everything, her entire left arm was uncovered
she started to recognize things around her and soon realized with a mix of relief and dread that to get home she would have to go through the school, on one hand she could grab some more bandaids for her arm and call her mom with the phone in the school, but on the other hand there were some people here she really did not wanna run into, especially right now.
she realized she would have to go in to call her mom, the school was way too far from her house for her to walk and besides, it was class time right now so she probably wouldn't run into anybody wanting to give her a hard time.
she walked through the long halls and had made it through two halls before hearing someone yell
"hey look guys, its nerd-ceda"
"just leave me alone guys, I don't have time for this now" Luz replied
"awww, we missed you too, where you been the last six months, we missed taking your lunch money"
Luz got grabbed by the shoulder and slammed against the lockers, she looked up to see a mean looking girl with a pink streak in her blonde hair, Luz was used to this view, and after this she would usually just give her the money and get let off with a punch to the stomach, but she didn't have any money with her today
"oh did you forget your money today? well were just gonna give you a quick lesson so you never do it again"
"just leave me alone Amelia, ill bring you something tomorrow" Luz yelled in frustration, her arm was really starting to sting badly now
a small crowd gathered and was watching the exchange but noone intervened, and Amelia punched Luz in the face and had pulled back to hit again but a teacher parted the crowd and pulled her away from Luz while her friends slipped into the crowd to avoid punishment.
the teacher started to drag Amelia to the principals office but Amelia pulled from her grasp to get in Luz's face and say
"tonight, you and me, the football field, and whoever wants to come watch can" she finished, gesturing to the crowd, then she was pulled into the principles office
Luz was waiting in the office for her mom to come get her, she had gone to the nurses office and got patched up, while she could usually expect a black eye or bloody nose from Amelia, she barely felt anything, no pain afterwards and the punch itself felt pretty soft too.
before she could think more on it her mom rushed in and hugged her tight
"mija are you okay? what happened to your forehead? did you get in another fight?"
"mom, can we please talk about this in the car?"
her mom looked around and said
"of course"
