"Open your fucking door or we'll break it down!"
I groan and get out of bed as my best friend, Kiara, demands for me to let her and some others in over the phone. She interrupted a real good fucking nap. I fix my long, dark brown hair a little before heading for the door in my light pink tank top and shorts.
"We?" I catch on to Kiara's words a little later.
A louder, bolder voice overtakes the call. "Party tonight!" Eliana, my other best friend, yells into Kiara's phone and I can hear the big smile in her voice.
Kiara and Eliana are my girls and I'd never go anywhere without them. Ever since we got paired together for a group project in the 8th grade, we've never been seen apart. Kiara's definitely the opposite of Eliana, who's extremely extroverted and a party animal. As for me, I fall right in the middle.
I shake my head and open the door to let them in, hanging up the phone. "Sorry, you said party tonight?" I clarify.
"Sure did!" Eliana beams as she skips inside, holding three matching dresses. Kiara follows in behind her.
I close the door behind them and raise a brow at Kiara, to which she shrugs with a smile. "She convinced me."
Eliana lays the dresses down on my couch. I eye the dresses and then my gaze shifts to three headsets next to them.
Just then, the realization hit. "No way we're going to a costume party," I sigh, dumbfounded.
A cheetah, a black cat, and a bunny.
Before I can object, my dad walks out. "Good evening, girls." He acknowledges my friends and they greet him in return. He looks over at the dresses before looking at me.
"Party tonight?" He asks, chuckling at the reluctant look on my face.
In my house, it's only me, my dad, and my little sister— Reyna. Our mother left the picture after hooking up with another man and moving away with him. Not after stealing some of my dad's money, of course.
He likes to act like he doesn't care, but I hear him crying some nights. I hear the voice mails.
"Jessica please just come back to me, I'll give you the money you want."
"I don't see what I did wrong, why couldn't you love me?"
I wish he could just let go.
I roll my eyes at my dad's laughter. "Apparently," I mumble.
"Yes there is!" Eliana blurts out.
My dad grabs his water and heads back to his room. "You girls have fun."
"No, dad please! Come back!" I whisper yell, wanting him to forbid this from happening.
Kiara laughs, "Oh, come on, Nai. We'll be so cute and plus it's been a while since we've been to a party."
