They all stood in the gas station parking lot with the cars on either side.
We can't stay here, Atlanta is done," Denis said, folding his arms.
"Where do we go then," Doug said, standing up from Jason's body.
"I hear Mississippi is nice," Cooper said leaning against one of the cars.
"Well let's go then," Denis replied.
Denis and Doug went in his car and Cooper, Amy and Melissa went in Cooper's car. They started driving, Cooper's car was in front and Denis was behind. After about an hour Denis honked his horn and they both pulled off to the side of the road.
Cooper got out of his car and looked at Denis.
"Damn thing is almost empty," Denis shouted towards Cooper. "The nearest gas station is 2 miles out from here,"
They were stopped in the middle of a long stretch of road with tall trees on either side. The road was empty and full of leaves. The only things on the road were a couple dead bodies and the two cars.
There were too many people to all pile into Cooper's car and the night time was approaching quickly.
"We are going to have to wait out the night here and figure something out in the morning," Cooper said, limping towards Denis.
Nightfall came in two hours but it felt like days. Cooper had volunteered to stay up as watch. Cooper sat on the top of his car roof with his pistol sitting next to him. Marissa and Amy slept in the backseat of his car and Dennis and Doug slept in his car.
Cooper stared into the darkness of the trees, It was quiet. The sound of crickets overtook the sound of Cooper's thoughts. The group was still three hours out from mississippi. Cooper laid down and stared up at the stars. The night was clear and pure and the moon shined down on the car.
"Hey Coop, go get some sleep," Denis said from beside the car. "I can handle the watch, Can't sleep anyways.
"I got it," Cooper responded.
Denis carefully and quietly climbed up on the roof of the car and sat beside Cooper. Cooper sat up and forced his gun into the holster.
"You're a good man Cooper," Denis started, "I know what happened back at the station, With Matthew, So what happened,"
"He tried to run," Cooper said with tears in his eyes. "He was a coward, he wanted me dead,"
Denis sighed. "You're still a good man Coop, you did what you had to in order to stay alive, You need to do whatever you can to stay alive, for them," Denis said, motioning towards Amy and Marissa. "I trust you, I trust that you can and will do anything necessary to keep your family safe,"
Cooper looked around for a minute.
"You have a good conscious Cooper," Denis said finally, looking back at Cooper. "Your morals are good, that's what we need especially right now, It's what your family needs,"
The light nearly blinded Cooper as he woke up.
"Rise and Shine cupcake," Denis said, taking a rifle out of his car.
"What's going on," Cooper asked.
"Me and Doug are heading out to see what we can see," Denis said, handing Doug an empty duffle bag.
"Be safe alright," Cooper said looking at Denis. "If you aren't back in a couple hours i'll be looking for you myself,"
"We will be back," Denis said smiling.
Cooper watched Denis and Doug walk down the road until they were out of sight. The walk was long until they found civilization. The streets were empty and silent. After 30 minutes of walking they finally laid their eyes on a town. Doug gripped onto Jason's shotgun as he approached the streets of the town. It was empty. Windows were smashed and doors were kicked open.
