Amy Black. My mother. Hardly ever home. She worked in customer care at a computer store, and I guess they couldn't find another worker, because she worked all three shifts. Because of this, I'm usually alone when I get home. I live on a mostly isolated street, so I don't have anyone to visit or even talk to. So, I cook my own food, find my own entertainment, and wait for my mom to get home. But I don't usually achieve the last part, because it's either I'm asleep when she gets home, or she's so tired she just falls asleep when she gets home. The only traits I know I got from her are my voice and my smile. My mom has a little gap between her two top teeth; so do I. Apart from that, I don't see any resemblance between me and my mother.
All other features, my mother says, are from my dad. My dark glossy hair, my black eyes, even my behavior, by which I mean arrogance. I've never met him, though, my mom claimed he left when once I was born. Whether they were married or not, I didn't know. He had some important business that could not be disturbed. And he never came back. The times I got to talk to my mom, she looks at me, and said I reminded her of my father. They met a long time ago, during a war. He helped her as she was dying, and he fell in love with her. A few months after that incident, I joined the story. A young, defenseless little girl who never had a dad. Not even a memory, or a single picture.
And that just proved why they weren't coming. No mom or dad to come and see me. I started to cry. I missed my mom. I hated my dad. If only he came around once in a while, my mom wouldn't be stressed out the way she was. I tried to stop my tears from falling but I just couldn't.
"Heidi, are you thinking again?"
Lina was beside me. I wiped my tears.
"Thinking, not daydreaming, yes"
"As far as I know, they're the same thing", she replied. "Anyways, it's our turn to audition"

I walked out of the hall nervously. I didn't know whether we would be picked or not. Lina and Enid, from the way they were shivering, they felt the same way. Jay, however, had no fear, because he hadn't auditioned for anything.
"You guys look jumpy", Jay broke the silence.
"Yep, we sure are", Enid replied.
"This is an international show, probably the whole world would see us", Lina said.
"That is, if you get picked, which I sincerely doubt"
"Don't say that Jay", I told him. "But he's right. We might not get chosen"
"Don't worry Heidi", my bestie assured me. "We were good"
"Very good in fact", Enid added.
"Well, we'll find out tomorrow, won't we?"
"I guess so..."

Tuesday. The day everyone would know who was worthy to be on TV. Enid had gone to check the list to see whether we three had been picked or not. Lina and I sat down outside the drama hall nervously, waiting to hear what Enid had to say.
After waiting for five minutes, which felt like an hour to me, Enid came back, jumping and squealing. We joined her, even though she hadn't said a word. But we knew what had happened. We were chosen! We were part of the first fifty. We were so excited. Enid was dancing, Lina and I were singing, but we were all happy for each other, though we were in separate categories.
"Your song will be heard everywhere, Li", Enid said.
"Thanks to me", I added. "I've got the better voice"
"Oh, shut up, Heidi", Lina chuckled. "You don't write, that's why you're talking like that"
"What are you guys so happy about?", Jay said as he walked towards us.
"What you doubted we could do", Lina replied. "We're part of the fifty, Jay!"
"Oh, wow. I knew you guys would get in"
"Uh, no you didn't, bonehead. You said we wouldn't, actually"
"Aw, Heidi, you didn't take that to heart, did you?"
We heard someone scream.
"No way! I have to be in that show. You have to get me in!"
That was Aliya Baker. The four of us turned our heads to look at the sassy, rude and very popular queen bee, screaming at the drama teacher, Ms. Adell, to get her into the show.
"Young lady, obviously your act wasn't very good, and besides, fifty people have already been chosen. You can't possibly make me cancel-"
"Excuse me? Do you know who my father is?You obviously don't, if not, you should know he can get you out of any job for a lifetime"
I looked at Lina. She looked back at me. Jay and Enid looked at each other.
"Alright. I'll find a spot for you. I might have to cross out Enid Showel's performance"
"WHAT?! Y-you can't do that! I worked hard to get in!"
"I could cross out another name", Ms. Adell offered.
"No", Aliya said with a grin. "That one is fine"
"You can't just do that", Lina told the teacher.
"I'm sorry, miss", she replied sadly. "It's already been done".
She scurried off, but Aliya stayed behind. She gave us a crooked smile.
Enid was disappointed. She had wanted to dance on that show, and was looking forward to it. She had worked hard, even more than Lina and I did. Normally, she would have stood up to Aliya, but she just hung her head and started to cry.
Jay and Lina went over to comfort her. I continued glaring at her.
"Enid deserves this part more than you do, Ali", Lina said.
"Aw, sorry girl". She laughed. "Sorry, but I had to. I have to be in this show". By this time, lots of kids had gathered to watch.
"She worked hard to get this part", I told her.
She shrugged. "Well, talent does beat hardwork"
"So your talent is cheating, is it?", Jay asked.
Aliya laughed again. "I guess you could say that"
I was starting to get furious. I was already clenching my fists. This brat had been annoying us; annoying me from the first day. I wanted to pull out her pink hair from the roots. I was just about to feed her a knuckle sandwich when Lina stopped me.
"Calm down, Heidi"
But I wasn't calm. I needed to release my anger. I turned towards Lina. I glared at her. I stared hard at her. So hard that I thought I could the inside of her. It was then she froze. She looked at me, as if in fear and astonishment. Lina suddenly turned pale.
"Heidi...", she whispered, and then she dropped to the ground.
"Lina?". Enid tried to tap her awake. She didn't even flinch.
Then Jay said, "She's...dead"
