I shiver as I look down at my wrist. One minute and fifteen seconds until I meet my soulmate. Somewhere in this dusty library, someone else was waiting on the same thing. They had the same time on their Soulmate Timer. They were feeling the same way I was. Nervous. Scared. Will I make a fool of myself? Probably. But they were soulmates, they shouldn't care...right? Or will they care more?
This morning my father had told me that any girl would be lucky to have me. But he was my dad. He has to say that. That certainly didn't mean I was any less nervous. What would they be like? I wipe my hands on my jeans. It'll be fine, I tell myself. Just... meeting the person you're meant to be with. Nothing special. I groan into my fist. Not special my foot. This is the biggest moment of my young adult life.
Despite how much I tell myself not to, I look down at the timer attached to my wrist. Fourty-five seconds. What am I going to go for forty-five seconds? Suddenly, without any warning, my body jerks upward and I begin walking toward the non-fiction section. Past the geography books, past the ones about ghosts. My body stops moving a few yards away from the Titanic books.
There I see a girl with curly red hair. She keeps looking down at her wrist, nervousness caking her face. I too look down at my timer. Fifteen seconds. Does her's say the same thing? Or is she waiting on someone else? My heart pounds so hard that my chest begins to ache.
My body begins to move forward again as the clock on my wrists ticks seconds by. I make my way over to the red-haired girl. I don't look up from the timer on my wrist. That's when it happens. Many things began at that moment.
First thing, I bumped into the red-haired girl. Second, my timer starts beeping. Third, her's does as well. My heart stops as I look at her, and she looks at me.
"Sorry," I mutter.
She smiles at me. It's a kind smile that makes my worries melt away. "Hi," she says. "I'm Kathleen. Looks like I'm your soulmate."
