The sky was shining a deep crimson red through the window in my apartment. I looked outside and down at the street. Working in the Tech district has its benefits. Even in hell the streets around the area felt safer and nicer. There is even a private bus that takes me to work. Then again I worked my ass off for this job. I've learned and studied so much, so why am I so nervous about this interview? If I get the job not only will I be working at V Tower but I'll be working under the V's themselves. One of the managers, Max I think his name was, said I probably wouldn't see any of the V's much, but I dunno. I've heard about how powerful they are as overlords. I'm still more than a little concerned, but in hell, money makes the world go round and they offered me a lot for this job. That is if I get the job. I put on my best suit and did my hair. One look in the mirror made me smile. I looked ready for an interview, that's for sure. I headed downstairs and waited for the bus. I waited for quite a bit. Down the street there was a fancy car driving down. It was a dark navy blue with red strip lights lining the sides. As it got closer it started slowing down and stopped next to me. I looked side to side seeing if someone was waiting for this fancy car. The window rolled down. A tired looking demon stared at me.
"Y/N?"
I looked at him surprised.
"Yeah that's my name."
"Im Jack. Here to take ya to your interview."
"My interview? I thought I was taking the bus."
"Look, Max told me to come pick ya up. You can wait for the bus if ya like but the bus has to make a few stops and V Tower is the last on the list. If ya don't wanna be late I suggest ya get in."
He pressed a button and the side door slid open. The inside of the car shined a bright blue. I hesitated. Why would they send a fancy car to pick me up for just an interview? My curiosity got the better of me and I stepped into the car. The inside was super nice. Leather seats, large limo cabin. I see them drive by all the time. I sat in the back of the car so I could see Jack in the driver's seat. He started driving towards the tower. I could see his eyes in the rear view mirror. I had to be careful. This was still hell. I looked down. In the cupholder was a few glasses and a bottle of wine. Jack caught my glance.
"Help yourself to anything." He said.
Maybe some wine to calm my nerves would be fine. Could be the reason I'm so paranoid. I grabbed the bottle and poured a glass. Slowly sipping it we soon arrived to the tower. I gulpt down the last bit of wine and took a deep breath. Jack opened the door and shouted from the front seat.
"They'll getcha goin at the front desk. Good luck I guess!" He said.
I shook off his comment as I stepped out of the car. A bright yellow light shines out the front door. I looked up and down the tower. The top was out of view. I took a deep breath and went inside. Several demons scattered the lobby. Most of them were wearing uniforms. I went to the front desk.
" Um, Hello. I'm Y/N. I'm here for an interview?"
The lady behind the counter moved her eyes up.
"Just take a seat. I'll send Max down."
"Uh thanks."
I took a seat in the lobby. The place seemed busy and a tad overwhelming. Several journalists were in the lobby, probably waiting for one of the V's to pass through. Maybe I will see them more than even Max thought. Speaking of which, I could see him at the opposite end of the lobby trying to make his way through the sea of people. I stood up to meet him in the middle. He stumbled over a bit and dropped his clipboard. He picked it back up and fixed his shirt and glasses before making sure his hair was slicked back.
"Great Y/N you're here. Follow me."
His tone seemed a bit more upset compared to the first time we met. He lead to the elevator. We got in and he pushed a button. As we waited for the elevator to stop I saw that there was a camera in the corner of the elevator. It made meore than a bit uneasy knowing the V's were watching everything.
"There's been a change in plans, Y/N." Max began.
I looked over at him curiously.
"Mr Vox took a look at your application and decided that he didn't want me to interview you."
I looked down.
"Oh, does that mean you don't want me for the job?"
"No. Mr. Vox wanted to do the interview himself. He said that your skills would be better put to use under him, but I just think he doesn't trust me to do my job at this point. I interview many demons a week and all the sudden I can't fucking do my job?! Typical V's -"
What the hell?! Vox himself wants to interview me?! I suddenly got a pit in my stomach. I couldn't tell if I wanted to double die of excitement or pass out from nervousness. This was a big opportunity for me, but one that I was not prepared for.
"A-am I properly dressed for M-Mr Vox?!" I said shaking.
Max stopped to take a look.
"You look pretty good, but the V's have high standards. As long as you have a sense of style you'll be fine. Try not to smile too much. It makes them uneasy."
I took the deepest breath I could muster and tried to calm myself down. It's not like I've done anything wrong. I just hope I can be what Vox sees in me. The elevator dinged and came to a stop. The doors opened and Max lead me into a large room with TV's covering every wall. Each one seemed to be playing a different channel. In the center of the room was a large console with several monitors. They all seemed to be showing random security footage. A large swivel chair was turned towards the monitors and I could see a square head poking up from the top of the chair. There were several wires coming out of it and I knew this had to be Vox. We walked down the path up to the console. And suddenly the wires disconnected themselves from Vox's head. The monitors in front of him shut off and he quickly spun his chair around.
"Max! Great you brought my interviewie!" Vox announced boldly.
He threw his arms out smiling and crossed his legs.
"Yes sir. This is Y/N." Max said introducing me.
I put my hand out.
"It's nice to meet you in person, sir."
"Of course! Thankyou Max. That will be all." He said dismissing Max.
Max left the room.
Vox was surprisingly very friendly. I just hope this interview goes over just as well. I heard a mechanical click and suddenly a sheet of metal rose out of the floor in between us.
"Let's get this started shall we?" He said.
Vox seems to always speak as if he is on the news.
"Please, have a seat."
At first I didn't see a place to sit, but then I looked down to see a circular piece of the floor come out to perfect seat height for me and I sat down. I tried to fake a smile but then I rembered what Max said. I didn't want to be rude or seem uniterested so I tried to muster a smile, but I was so nervous I could feel my smile fading out of existence. There was a big time overlord sitting in front of me. I've never met or even seen one in person before. Vox took out a piece of paper and a pen.
"Now, Y/N. First of I'd like to thankyou for coming in today. I've been searching for a new assistant for some time now and based on your resume I think you could be the perfect fit. I just wanted to be sure."
My stomach sank.
"I-I'm sorry s-sir. Did you say your a-as-"
"My assistant! Your skills with technology seem to be very useful if you're as good as you say." He stopped and noticed how surprised I was. His screen flashed for a second. "Did Max not tell you?"
"Um no sir. H-he only mentioned that you wanted to perform the interview."
"I see, well I guess I forgot to tell him that part!" He said chuckling a bit.
My head sank down.
"Sir, I'm very sorry, but I don't think I'm qualified for the job you're offering." I began to stand.
"Wait!" He exclaimed with a glitch in his voice. He nearly jumping out of his seat. I wasn't expecting that kind of response from him. He sounds......desperate. Why does he think I'll be any good at being his assistant? I stopped.
"At least hear me out. This job will pay very well, I can assure you."
I sat back down and he relaxed letting out a sigh of relief.
"I'll tell you what the job is and then I have a few questions to ask. I need someone who can be by my side as a personal assistant. You'll get your own desk in front of my office where you can take calls and schedule my meetings. I'll occasionally ask you to make some repairs here in my studio."
So far the job didn't sound too hard or too bad. Maybe I could be an assistant of some kind.
"This might be a hard ask, but like I said I'm willing to pay. I need you to watch my fellow overlords. Sometimes there are things that even my cameras can't see and I believe the other V's have been keeping secrets from me. I need someone they wouldn't really care about to keep an eye on them occasionally."
"You want me to spy on your coworkers?" I asked a bit taken back.
This job suddenly sounds more stressful.
"Technically yes. You'd have a higher ranking in the building. Essentially you'd be Max's boss. Think of me as your sugar daddy, without the sex part."
That's a weird way to put it. This sounds dangerous, but is it worth it for the money? My thoughts went back and forth. Could the other V's really be conspiring against their partner? My curiosity got the better of me.
"I do have some questions to ask you just to establish some boundaries if you do decide to take the position."
I nodded.
"Great now, are you ok with being on live TV?"
"Um I suppose I don't mind."
"Don't worry. We won't turn you into a public figure, but you'll need to attend any press conferences I go to and you might be in the shot. Do you mind?
"No, that should be fine."
Vox looked down and scribbled on the paper.
"Next, I'd like to ask if you're ok with ordering the staff at V Tower around? You'll take on a big leadership role around here."
I get to boss people around?! Maybe this could be my dream job.
"Yes, that is fine with me, sir."
He scribbled on the paper again.
"Are you ok with seeing some of the staff naked?"
That question caught me very off guard. My face grew hot with blush. Did I hear him correctly?
"I'm sorry, what?!"
"As you know, Valentino has his own influence in the building. As the overlord of the sex industry his staff might be more on the nude side. You might not see his studio very much, but I can't promise that you won't see any random naked staff roaming around the halls."
I suppose I don't mind. It is a little weird that they just let random staff walk around naked, but I guess it makes sense seeing as this is where the adult film industry has its roots.
"I-I guess I don't mind, sir."
"Wonderful!" He said scribbling.
"Are you ok with being talked down to?" Vox paused regretting his word choice. "Not that I'd treat you with any disrespect, but my fellow Overlords tend to talk down to the rest of the staff." He said a bit frazzled.
"Do they now?"
I could feel my confidence suddenly rise within me.
"I don't let the words of others get to me. I'll be fine with that, sir."
"Fantastic!" He scribbled something before setting down the pen and clasping his sharp fingers together on the table. "Well, you seem even more qualified for the job than you were before. If you're up for it I'd like you to at least shadow me for a few days so you can get a better idea of what things are like around the building and then make a decision then? I'll pay for that too."
I thought long and hard. I wonder why Vox was so eager to have an assistant. He was practically begging me to take the job, but it was hard to say that I wasn't interested.
"I suppose a look around wouldn't hurt."
"Great! My driver Jack will be by to pick you up tomorrow morning."
"Jack? Isn't he the one who picked me up this morning?"
"Yes, he's my personal driver. I'll make sure he arrives at 10 tomorrow to pick you up. Thankyou again for coming in. I'll see you tomorrow." He said with a toothy smile.
I gave him a small nod before standing up to leave. As I walked out I thought about everything Vox said. The job was certainly interesting but it was a lot to take in at once. I could be Vox's assistant. What a title! I was feeling a little more confident in taking the job at least. I knew a lot about Vox as an overlord, about Vox tech and about the V's in general. Vox's personal driver would pick me up everyday. The benefits and the pay were great, but......is it worth it?
