Chapter 5

Sophie

October

I narrow my eyes at the exam score on my screen for several moments. I blink, then blink again, making sure what I am seeing is clear.

98/100

I am...brilliant!

I gasp and do a happy dance in my seat in my Cognitive Psych class. The movement causes several people, including Dr. Kumar, and Leo Moretti, to stop what they're doing and shoot me a look.

"Sorry," I mouth.

"As I was saying..." Dr. Kumar says, sounding like the perfect mixture of bored and highly disappointed, "...there will be plenty of opportunities for extra credit."

Several students groan.

I guess not everyone can be as badass and intelligent as yours truly.

I turn my laptop to my new bestie, George St. Clair.

"Can you just confirm I'm not crazy? That is an A, right?" I hiss.

George narrows his eyes at my screen, pushes his glasses up, then smiles kindly at me.

"Congrats, Sophie!" George says. "That's not just an A, that's an A plus."

"How did you do?" I ask.

"90," George smirks.

I hold up my hand for a high-five. George looks pleased as he claps his hand against mine.

"We so totally rock, George!" I do another happy dance. George snorts a laugh. Dr. Kumar wraps up her lecture and the class gets dismissed. George and I gather our things. "What are you doing this weekend?" I ask him.

"This weekend?" George asks nervously. His sweater gets snagged on the side of the chair as we're walking out and he clumsily knocks over the chair. A few jerk-offs walking behind us cackle meanly. I shoot them dirty looks.

Don't fuck with my George.

"Yeah! Like, you know, socially?" I smirk.

George and I make our way into the hallway and walk step-in-step towards the exit. Normally, I'd try to follow Leo Moretti – but he continues to find ways to run ahead of me.

I'll break him down eventually.

"I'm not sure," George sighs. "My one friend got me an invite to the Reeve Club. I was thinking of trying it out this weekend."

"Ooh, is that like an exclusive nightclub?" I ask.

George snorts again. "Hardly. It's a chess club."

"No kidding!" I laugh. "My cousins love chess."

"Not you?" he asks.

"Nah. I don't have the patience. I don't like losing."

"That's fair," George replies, pushing up his glasses.

I nudge him. "Thursday there's this party. The Full Moon party. At the Wolves mansion. You should totally come."

George gives me a curious look.

"You know you can't get into that party without an invite?" he asks.
