The days were passing by and not much was happening in anyone's life.
Maddison was avoiding both Bianca and Simon, as she couldn't believe his best friend was dating someone so frivolous - and always taking her side, too.
Jenny and Levi were in a sort of a honeymoon fase, where they walked hand in hand in the corridors of the high school and they kissed by the lockers any chance they had.
School was more boring than ever, and that seemed impossible to Maddison, who had spent half of her 11th grade vandalizing Layla's notebooks.

"Layla, isn't that Aubrey?" asked Maddison while her and Layla were walking down to the cafeteria.

"Sure she is. Come on, let's get out of here"

Aubrey had started school late that year, because her father took the whole family to Tokyo in September, for the inauguration of a new branch of his company.
Nevertheless, she hadn't lost a second to invite
the whole 12th grade to her birthday party, that would have taken place that weekend.

"I still don't understand why Aubrey would invite me to her party. She can't stand me, and the feeling is reciprocal." stated Maddison, while observing Aubrey at distance.

"You know how she is, she wants everyone to come celebrate her. Plus, what could have she done? Invite everyone but you?" Layla was playing nervously with the hair tie on her wrist. Her disturbance was noticeable, but Maddison decided it was not the right moment to query.

"I really want to go to the party, but if you don't feel comfortable we can do something else together Saturday night" smiled Maddison, who was dying to see how ridiculous Aubrey's party would get.

Aubrey had a thing for giant, excessive, almost grotesque birthday parties: she loved being the center of attention, wearing enormous pink dresses and stupid little crowns. Maddison loved making fun of her during those parties, especially when Layla was still her closest friend, and had to come up with excuses as to why she acted the way she did. In Maddison's eyes, Aubrey was just an attention-seeker and a pick me, but in her parties there was a lot to drink and good music - other than a lifetime of jokes about Aubrey - so Maddison was kind of a strange fan of those events.

"No, I think I want to go, too." sighed Layla "It would be strange if I didn't. We used to be best friends, and I really don't wanna hear people asking about why I wasn't there all the time. Plus, I want to make sure she doesn't say any bullshit on what happened between us."

"Ok, I know you don't wanna talk about it, but what IF we found a dress SO princess-like that she would look like shit next to you? We could go..."

"Maddie, I'm not going to have some sort of revenge or to humiliate her." Layla knew her best friend had only the best intentions, but sometimes she needed to be...contained. Or she could become quite a lot to handle.

"But how are you gonna dress? Can we go shopping later? Pleeease" Maddison was aware that Layla would have never gone shopping without her, so she took advantage of the fact she needed a dress and she wanted to find the prettiest dress for her best friend, who would have otherwise come with her ordinary clothes.

"Yes, sure, fine" grumbled Layla. But deep down, she was excited about it too.

Maddison and Layla were the best shopping companions. Although nobody would have ever guessed it, Maddison loved dressing and dolling up from times to times, and Layla had started appreciating it when Maddison came in her life and, with brutal honesty, remade her whole wardrobe. Thus, the two made plans to go shopping the same afternoon after school, considering the party was only two days away.

"Should have we invited Jenny?" asked Maddison while sipping her black coffee down the shopping streets of their town.
