Maddison had been away for the whole summer of her eleventh grade. She had won a scholarship for "above-average students" and she had decided to spend it to party in Europe, other than broadening her knowledge in feminist literature of the XXth century.
She was a great student, even though she wouldn't admit it: she didn't like the whole concept of school - and she thought the American system was a waste of her time - , but still she managed to have excellent grades and always be prepared. Not that she paid attention or anything, she just really liked to read and learning seemed very easy for her.
The morning of the beginning of her twelfth grade, she felt unusually excited: she didn't know much about what happened during the summer, her only source of information being Layla, who wasn't exactly a social butterfly. Layla told her that Levi and Jenny got together a couple of weeks after Maddison left, that Bianca was still a bitch and that her and Aubrey grew a little colder - nothing Maddison had not foreseen and, as per the last part, hoped for. She was pretty happy about the whole situation, but she needed to assess how much things changed in her absence (and honestly, she REALLY needed a tiny bit of gossip).
Maddison felt genuinely pretty that morning. She knew she wasn't the "it girl" and she had hated herself for it in the past, always trying to be more feminine, to stop laughing so loudly and to be a little more mysterious: but she was passionate and always wanted to speak her mind, other than being so very messy, rendering the path for the clean girl aesthetic a bit too impossible. However, it seemed like at one point she decided to embrace who she was - and it was showing. She began to feel way more confident in Europe, and she was feeling amazing that day. She did her makeup, got dressed, realized she was too late for the bus and started to run to get to school on time. She knew she would not have made it, but at least she could have said that she tried.

"Old habits die hard, Miss Vexley", said Mr. Calder as Maddison stormed through the door, "welcome back from Europe".
"Good morning to you too Mr. Calder", replied Maddison already irritated. Maddison wasn't known for being the most patient human on earth, and Mr. Calder seemed to always know how to get on her nerves.
Maddison scanned the room to see which seats were still available. She knew she had to be quick, because Mr. Calder had no other wish than for her to sit in the first row, where she could not read her books, draw her drawings or annoy him with her utter disinterest for his class. She had not finish peeping around the room yet, when she heard a voice from the back of the room.
"Over here, dumbass" said Levi, while moving the chair and inviting her to sit down.
Maddison was a bit surprised. Levi and her always used to sit together in class, but she had guessed that had changed, as he got together with Jenny over the summer. But she had not much time to think before Mr. Calder would force her to sit in front of him, so she sprinted to reach the spot Levi had reserved for her.
"How was Europe, Dyson?" asked Levi as she was sitting down.
"Well, I missed meeting Mr. Calder at 8 am, Jeans" replied Maddison.
"And you didn't miss me?? I'm offended", he said as he turned his back to her.
"Yes, I surely missed you being so prickly" answered Maddison, while searching for Layla across the room.
"Where is Layla hiding, Jeans?" asked Maddison.
"She is in the bathroom genius... can't you see her stuff right in front of you? Like, she has not changed her backpack in 4 years?"
