Veritas Ratio sighs, drumming his fingers on the counter rhythmically. His thoughts kept drifting back to the damn gambler. Considering how he'd been recently, he was probably either already drunk, or hung over from the night before. Aeons, the man was going to drink himself to death at this rate! Finally giving in, Ratio finds Aventurine's contact on his phone, his breakfast set aside, much to the dismay of his stomach. Not wanting to waste his time with meaningless pleasantries, he goes directly to the call button.
The phone rings and rings, Ratio tapping his foot impatiently as he waits for a response. But all he gets is voicemail. He calls again, and waits, then again... and finally, gets a response.
"What do you want?" The voice on the other end is slow and drowsy.
He couldn't help a sigh of relief. "Aventurine..." For once in his life, the words don't come to him. "Aventurine-"
"Did you really call 3 times just to say my name? Come on, out with it."
"I-" He clears his throat. "Meet me at the coffee shop at 0730. Make sure you brush your teeth and change your clothes, I know you've been drinking."
Silence on the other end, followed by a sigh. "Alright..." Aventurine hangs up.
Ratio leans over the counter, head in his hands. "What am I going to do with you, Aventurine?" He groans, a stark contrast from his usual confident demeanor. Aeons, that gambler was his only weakness. He wipes a tear from his eye and puts his intended breakfast in the fridge for later. A tear...
Am I crying?
Why?
He quickly gets changed into his usual attire, which was freshly washed, fixing up his hair, before heading to the coffee shop nearby.
And now, he waits.
0730 came and went with no sign of Aventurine. Veritas, growing impatient, had half a mind to lecture Aventurine about the importance of punctuality when he arrives, but he decides that it can wait- he has far more important topics to discuss with the man.
0739, Aventurine finally arrives. From a quick glance, he appears completely composed, his hair in its place and his clothes just as bright as the day they were bought. But his eyes were tired, hazy and unfocused, despite the smile on his face.
"You're nine minutes late."
"I know."
He smells sickly sweet.
His face was covered in a uniform color, makeup to cover up the bags under his eyes, no doubt.
These were things that the gambler could not hide from Ratio.
Did he really notice all the tiniest details of this man's face?
