My eyelashes fluttered as light filtered in through the clear window. I removed the blanket from atop from legs and set it aside, sit up and out of bed. I limp to the window and get a good view of the Capitol for the first time.
What strange and wild world was Autumn lost in without me?
I stood by the window, staring out at the strange and unfamiliar city when a knock at my door startled me back into reality. "Come in." I call, then turn back to the window. Footsteps. A door shutting. More footsteps approaching. I turn to confront the man when I see it's not a man at all. It was a woman. And behind her walked in two children. One female and one male. Both had curly black hair and blue eyes. "Parsnip! Tansy!" The two kids ran up to me, embracing me fiercely. I kissed each of them on their head in turn, rubbing the back of Parsnip's head. "We thought you left us for good." He said, sniffling. "Of course I didn't." I say. I stood, eyes widened as I notice the women. "Mother." I run to her, embracing her with choking sobs. We embrace, and are soon joined by Parsnip and Tansy.
Jasmine's curly black hair flashed at the edge of my vision.
I stand and stare at the doorway, where she was leaning against the doorway, one leg bent and foot pushing against the wooden frame. Her curly brunette hair tumbled in locks down her shoulders, and her green eyes stared intensely at me. A childish grin lit her gaze and she was wearing a standard brown leather bomber jacket.
"It's good to see you're awake!" She says to me, grinning. I return the grin. "Where'd ya get it?" I gesture to the jacket. She pulled on one side. "This old thing? It was my father's."
I stopped in my tracks as a boy with blond hair and hazel eyes walked up to Jasmine and hugged her shoulders, giving her a kiss. She returned it and together they walked off. I recognized the boy as Pluto MildCreek, from Jasmine's story of her at the hospital.
My heart cracked. I physically and emotionally FELT IT.
My gaze fell but, oddly enough, I wasn't actually that disappointed. My heart cracked only slightly. But it would mend. Although it seemed as if Jasmine wouldn't be needing me anymore.
I shoved my hands in my pockets and strolled off to find Autumn in this crazy place.
And I'd start with the hospital.
