The gymnasium was ablaze with decor that reminded me of The Little Mermaid. I stood there, clapping vigorously as Neo and Piper were crowned the new prom king and queen. Their smiles were infectious, and for a moment, everything was ideal. Before I realized Banks was no longer beside me.
Banks was beside me as I ran up to Piper, hugging and congratulating her on the big win. As we screamed and jumped in celebration, I turned around to see my boyfriend was no longer there. When I scanned the room to find Banks, I saw Jay making eye contact with me. I rolled my eyes, expecting some snarky comment from him if we spoke.
But instead, he walked over and the snark came from me. As he got closer, I took notice of his ridiculous outfit that took the theme too far. "What are you wearing?" I laughed but I was almost embarrassed to be around him.
"What?" He said flaring his suit jacket that was covered in little fishes out. "I like it!"
I could barely contain my laughter. "You look like Finding Nemo threw up on you!"
He snorted, extending his arm. "May I have this dance, milady?" Jay asked.
I glanced at Liv, talking to her friends by the drink table. She seemed unhappy and I was hoping it wasn't over Jay or me. "Your lady is over there," I pointed to her.
"And I don't think my boyfriend would like that." I started to walk away but he grabbed my hand and spun me around.
He made my body shutter. I hated that he could still do that to me. "She's not paying attention and I can't find your date. I don't think they'll mind."
I blushed, unsettled that he noticed Banks was missing. But that wasn't the only reason why. Jay carefully put his hand on my hip. I slipped into his arms like it was the most natural thing in the world.
The dance floor pulsated with music, and I rocked in Jay's arms. His touch felt normal like we were kids again. But it wasn't the prom night I always envisioned with him. We were both there with different people, and dancing together, as simple as it seemed, was unfair to them. Yet, I couldn't pull myself away.
