LAYLA

Today, I'm going to look for a job. I'm going to work for three months before I resume the university. It's 8:00 AM right now so the shops must be open. I want to work in a cafe. I love going to cafes to study or hang out and I've always wanted to experience working there.
I applied to three cafes and I have two interviews today and the third is tomorrow. My mum made me a bagel toast and a smoothie. I'll have that and leave.

~~~
I have been sitting here for an hour now. Turns out there are lots of applicants for this cafe. I didn't know people like to work in cafes too.
"Layla Tadia Richard. Please come in." said the lady calling us all in. I was confident that I'd get the position. This was my favorite cafe which means I come here a lot. I know so much about this place so I'm confident about it, hehe.
~~~
It's okay, I have another interview today. That's probably it. It's okay, Layla. You'll be fine. I thought to myself fighting back my tears. I quickened my pace to meet the bus.

~~~
"Hi! I'm here for my interview" I said to the cashier. "What's your name?" She asked. "Layla Tadia. Layla Tadia Richard." I said tapping my fingers on the desk. She checked for a few minutes and said, "Sorry, you missed the interview. Your turn was fifteen minutes ago." No, no, no, no, no. "Can't you fix me in somewhere? Please, I almost had an accident on my way here. I didn't mean to be late, please" I explained desperately with an unstable breath. To be honest, I needed this job. My grandmother is sick and she needs an operation. Although her surgery is not pressing, I hope she'll get out of the pain. I know she's enduring just for us but I know she feels so much pain. My parents can only afford her maintenance treatment and she's been receiving that for almost a year now. I was hoping I'd get a job and I was confident about it. I wanted to surprise her.
"I'm sorry, Layla. You were her last candidate and she already left." She said with a sympathetic look. I forced a smile and left.
I went to the nearest bus station and sat there for a while.
It's all his fault. He almost hit me with his car yet he didn't apologize. I was late and I should have left but his ego was irritating me and I wanted to step on it. That little whore carrier tried to pay me because he said I was causing a scene. Is money everything to him? Would it hurt to say an apology? The little whore in his car had the guts to come out, in that skimpy little dress that I could blow open, to tell me to calm down and accept the money and leave. How dare she? I wanted to rip both their hairs off but I held myself back, said "Disgusting" and left. That should have been enough to stump on their pride.
Now that I think of it, that guy was the guy from last night at the bar. I remember now. I wasn't sure where I met him but now I know. When I saw him looking all classy, I thought it was some affluent person but now I know it was that disgusting guy from the bar. I shouldn't be surprised he's moving around with a slut. Such a womanizer
"Hey, love. How I'm were your interviews?" My mum asked. I didn't reply to her but went straight to the freezer, pulled out a bowl of ice cream and strawberry syrup, and sat beside her while I cried and took the ice cream. She comforted me. "You know it's not necessary to take a job right? You could learn a skill instead" she said. I know it's because she didn't know the reason I'm taking this job and I'm not telling because they'll try to stop me. I smiled and told her that I wanted to work and earn money. She asked why and I told her that it was because I wanted to have money to shop and order whenever I wanted. She just laughed and said not to take it too seriously. I was feeling sleepy at this moment. I just wanted to sleep and forget I ever applied for a job. I dozed off on my mother's shoulder.
I woke up to the smell of pesto. The dark living room beamed with reflections from the auroras. I got up from the couch and moved towards the kitchen. There it was, my comfort food, pesto pasta. Aghhh, how I've craved that all week. I hugged my mum from behind as she placed the leaf on the pasta. She released herself from the hug and gave me the pasta. It was looking so good. I love how she'll make the pesto from scratch and make sure the taste is well embedded in the pasta. I mouthed to her a 'thank you' as I rubbed my tummy dramatically and went to the dining table. I devoured it.
~~~

I was woken up by my dad yanking the blanket off me. I rolled in bed for a few seconds before opening my eyes.

"Your mom told me that you have another interview today and you gotta get your ass up and move out," he said while sitting on the edge of my bed. I sat up and told him I didn't want to go anymore.

"Lay love. I heard about what happened yesterday and I want you to know that life is not full of roses," he said with his hands on my leg, comforting me. "Yesterday didn't work out because you're better than what they need. Don't ever feel bad that they rejected you. Instead, think that it's because you've exceeded their expectations and can't meet your standard." he continued and paused "And you should never lower your standards for anyone or anything" he concluded. I hugged my knees and rested my chin on them. He got up and kissed my head before leaving, closing the door behind him.

He is right.

~~~~~
"-and with that, I believe I'm best suited for this position." I said with a confident and radiant smile. I could see them talking.
After what seemed like an eternity for me, the female interviewer turned to me and told me to wait outside. I had high hopes this time.
Please don't let me down. This is my last resort.
~~~

"I'm so happy to hear that you've selected me for this job, and I'm thrilled to accept your offer to join your team." I said with a handshake. I was given a tour of the place after and I must say this place is bigger than I imagined.

~~~
"We have to celebrate babes!" she said screaming into my ears. I placed the phone in the bed, putting it on speaker. I paced around my room with my hands in my waist. "I know but I don't want to jinx it" I said looking in the mirror that was by my side.
"Jinx my foot! We're going to the salon tonight!" She said in a commanding voice.
"Oh no! Not the bar, Ayanaaaaa" I said plopping back on my bed onto my back with my arms spread out. "No no no Lay! We're going! Don't be such a boreeeee. We have t- Aarun! Sto- oh my- I'll see you tonight Lay. I have to go" she ended. I stood up and fully faced the mirror with my hands holding my head.
This is it. No, this has to be it, Layla. I'm going to help in saving you, grandma. Hang in there some more.
