Burgess and Burk. Two villages seperated by a dark forest. The forest is only about 10 miles long, but everybody is scared of it. Not to mention Burk is on a rocky island. Nobody can get to it except for by boat or flying. I live in Burgess, while the Vikings live in Burk. Most people think Vikings died out in 1022, but it's 1712 and they are still here. Oh sorry. I'm Jack Overland. Except for my school teacher, everybody just calls me Jack. She insist on saying my full name every single time she calls on me. Ah yes. School. The only time when you can see people from the opposite village. Not that it would matter though, I don't have any friends. Except for my sister, Iduna. She is a bit younger then me so we can't be in the same class. We are on our way to school right now in fact. "Jack! Jack! Jack! Look at that! Do you see it Jack? Look Jack, look!" Iduna skipped up to me and pointed at the ground. A little tiny butterfly was sitting there. I laughed, "Yes I see it Una. It's very pretty isn't it?" She giggled and started skipping again. "Iduna wait!" I called. Dang. Little children are fast. I ran after her and we arrived at the school. Nothing much, just a two story building. There were 6 classrooms on each floor. Each classroom was one grade. Iduna is in grade 3. I am in grade 8. I walked up the stairs. Grades 7-12 are on the upper level. I rounded the corner and ran into sombody. "Hey!" I yelled. I looked up. A boy about my age was quickly getting up. His brown shaggy hair was covering his eyes, but they looked and emerald color. Kind of like his shirt. I looked at his brown fur coat and I knew that he is from Burk. He quickly gathered up his books that he had dropped and apologized. "It's okay. Are you new here?" I asked. I had never seen him before. "Y-yeah. Kind of. I-i got moved up from 6th to 8th today." He stuttered slightly. Hm, he must be about 11 then. How could he be able to skip two grades? I thought. "How come you skipped to grades?" I asked him. He glanced up at me, then quickly looked down. "I was already working on advanced dragon battle techniques and I knew how to make a double bladed axe. Your not supposed to know that until 8th grade. I also invented a few other things. So they moved me up here with the 14 year olds." he explained shyly. Oh wow. This kid is smart. We are only just beginning double bladed axes. "So your in Mrs. Lambidon's class?" I asked him. "Yeah, but I don't know anybody in that class." I laughed. "Well your in luck kid because I'm in that class." We walked to the door and went into the classroom. Everybody was already there. Except for Mrs. Lambidon. Figures. I sat down in my spot and the kid nervously waited by the teachers desk. As soon as Mrs. Lambidon entered the room hushed. She was a real witch, to everybody else. She is nice to me. Nobody else likes her. Except she could weld and forge a blade quicker then anybody. So she had her good points. "Good morning. We have a new student. Hiccup Haddock." The room grew even more silent. A few gasps, but only from the Burk students. Astrid Hofferson rolled her eyes. "What is he doing here?" She scoffed. I hate her. She mean to everyone. Yet everybody trips head over boots for her. Mrs. Lambidon glared at her. She also hated Astrid, another good point. "He has skipped grades 6 and 7 because he has a higher intellect then his old classmates. Probably smarter than you Astrid. He didn't get held back." Astride jaw fell to the floor. There were giggles around the room. I fell out of my chair laughing. "Somthing funny blockhead?" Astrid asked me. "Yeah Astrid" I had to pause to stop laughing. "You just got insulted by a teacher!" Astrid glared at me but I was to busy cracking up to care. "Now. Hiccup, take a seat over by the man laughing like a hyena." Mrs. Lambidon said. At first I thought she was insulting me. I don't laugh like a heyna. Nobody knows what hyenas are even. Then I saw her wink at me and I knew she was joking. Hiccup sat down and I turned around. "So, your Hiccup?" I asked. "Yeah that's me. Hiccup Haddock." He spit out his name like it was foul. "I'm Jack by the way. Jack Overland." I said. "BOYS!" I whipped around in my seat. When Mrs. Lambidon yells, I take her seriously. She went on explaining somthing about metals and melting points. I yawned, pulled my hood up, and fell asleep.
