For the rest of the year the students acted as if they were sure that Mrs Dodds never existed instead a Mrs Bastile-a middle age blonde woman who Percy and Madeline had never seen in their life until they saw her get on the bus back to campus had been their pre algebra teacher since Christmas.Every so often Madeline and Percy would say jokes or references to Mrs Dodds on anyone, to see if they could make them slip up the act. Instead they got looked at as if they were insane. It was so weird they almost believed them.Mrs Dodds never existed.
Key word being almost.Grover couldn't fool them. Whenever they made jokes or said the name Dodds. He hesitated and then would say she doesn't exist or something like that. But both of them knew he was lying.
Something weird had happened in the museum. It's as if the whole school got brainwashed or something.
At night though, they constantly had bad nightmares about her. She would appear with those leathery wings of hers. Waking them up in a cold sweat. And whenever one would wake up because of a nightmare like that, they would text the other about it.Now. Madeline and Percy were in Madeline's dorm. Studying for their Latin final. They already knew they were never coming back there because they had gotten in multiple fights with Nancy. And because Percy had called their English teacher an old sog meanwhile Madeline called their Biology teacher an old hag who knows nothing.
"This is useless!" Percy threw the 'Cambridge guide to Greek mythology'
"Come on now Perce! Let's just try a bit harder!" Madeline said sounding annoyed.
"Easy for you to say! You learned how to read somehow!" Argued Percy.
"It's not like I'm good at it! I mostly listen to audiobooks and try to keep up with the words!" Argued back Madeline
"This is hopeless!" Said Percy
"I know. But you still gotta try!" Madeline replied
Percy groaned and crossed his arms against his chest.
"Look should we just ask Mr Brunner for help?" Asked Madeline
"Fine whatever." Replied Percy. They left Madeline's dorm and started walking towards the faculty office. They could hear two voices from behind the door. And it was a familiar voice. Grover.
"... Worried about Percy and Madeline sir.."
They weren't usually eavesdroppers. Well Madeline was. They inched closed to hear more clearly."... alone this summer," Grover was saying "I mean a Kindly One in the school! Now that we know for sure, and they know too-"
"We would make matters worse by rushing them." Spoke Brunner.
"We need the both of them to mature more."
"But they may not have time. The summer solstice deadline-"
"Will have to be resolved without him, Grover. Let them enjoy their ignorance while he still can."
"But sir they 𝘀𝗮𝘄 her..."
"Their imagination, the mist over the students and staff will be enough to convince them of that."
"Sir I-i can't fail my duties again..." Grover sounded like he was on the verge of tears. "And you know what that means..."
"You haven't failed,Grover," Mr Brunner said kindly
"I should have seen her for what she was. Now let's just worry about keeping Madeline and Percy alive until next autumn-"
