Few years ago
I quietly stare at the crowd of ladies dancing in front of my eyes, Kyra lets out another squeal as her bf picks her up, spinning her around to make her chuckle. She leans into his body before catching his lips between her, softly kissing him. I look away from their little make-out session, my eyes graze the room to find her brother, making sure he has an eye on her so she doesn't get in trouble.
It was our princess' 21st birthday, and the girl only wanted a small party at her house, until her boyfriend of few months, Tanmay, swooped in asking her to go clubbing along with him and his friends. As much as her eyes denied his decision, she agreed with the condition that her friends get to tag along. And the reason I was involved in the whole clubbing shit was because of Anvi.
It didn't get them all to loosen up on a few drinks. I eye Anvi passed out in the corner on one of the couches, Shiv and Ishaan talking quietly beside her keeping a look on her sleeping body before shaking my head. As much as I urged to walk over and take my cousin back home, my soul hesitated, the reason being the short, slender woman swaying her hips right in front of me.
Kaynaaz snickers at something a thin boy whispers into her ear, before leaning closer to him and mumbling a secret to him which causes him to jerk back with wide eyes. He releases the delicate grip he had on her waist and turns away, escaping the crowded dance floor. As she watches him go, Kaynaaz's smirk remains, a glint of mischief in her dark eyes.
She throws her head back before letting out a laugh and then her sparkling orbs land on me.
Kaynaaz was the youngest of the Rajvanshi lot. While her sister had the bubbly side to her, she was more of a goth Barbie, nice with those who deserve it, and mean with those who got in her pretty face.
As much as I admired her, we've never said a word to each other. Not because we hold a grudge, but more because we've never actually been in a room together.
Being close to Kanshik was not a surprise, our grandmothers being close, our fathers being business partners, automatically led yes to converse more than we might've liked.. but I was definitely the closest to him now.
As for Kyra, it wasn't hard to like her. She's a ball of sunshine and almost always greeted everyone who came to her father's house parties. And then there was the phase of her and Mariam being close, very close, back when they were in high school and although they aren't much the same anymore, I know they're in contact. Whatever the means, I was close with the elder two.
But Kaynaaz had always been a mystery. A mystery I wanted to solve someday.
"Hi, Mr. Khan,"
She talks towards me, her steps slightly unsteady from the couple of drinks she had. Her movements are slow. I can smell the faint scent of sweet liquor on her breath, as she places a hand on my chest.
"Is there a reason we never talk? I mean, I'm hot, you're okay, then why resist me so much?"
"And what makes you think I'm resisting you?"
"The way you talk to me siblings and not me? Or perhaps the way you smile with Kyra but don't even lift your eyes at me?"
"So you want me to look at you?"
A smirk tugs at my lips seeing her cheek coat with a pink tint. She is completely unaware of how often I steal glances at her. In moments like these, when she laughs with her best friends or playfully messes around, or even during quiet moments when she hides the pain in her heart caused by someone's hurtful words. I am captivated by her beauty and strength. Her expressions are like strokes on an artist's canvas. And I can't help but admire her from afar, trying to memorise every detail of her that makes my heart beat faster.
