Chapter 3: A Helping Hand (and Foot)
Sweat beaded on Elias' forehead despite the cool mountain air. He navigated the treacherous rocks with surprising agility, his reliance on sound years in the making. Reaching the base of the cliff, he shone the flashlight upwards, spotting Aria huddled in the narrow crevice.
"Can you hear me?" he called out, his voice carrying through the wind.
"Loud and clear!" Aria responded, her voice shaky but hopeful.
He assessed the situation. Scaling the sheer rock face himself was too risky, especially in the dark. He needed a different approach.
"I have some climbing gear," he announced, his voice echoing. "Do you think you can climb down a bit with my help?"
Aria hesitated. Climbing down with one leg, especially in this wind, was risky. But considering the alternative, she had little choice. "I can try," she replied, a hint of determination in her voice.
Elias disappeared for another minute, returning with a sturdy rope and a harness. He instructed Aria on how to put on the harness, his voice calm and reassuring. He secured himself to a nearby rock with another rope, creating a belay system to control the descent.
"Alright, Aria," he announced, "whenever you're ready."
Taking a deep breath, Aria shifted her position in the cramped space. Reaching down, she nervously unbuckled the straps of her prosthetic leg. This was it. The moment she'd dreaded.
A pang of self-consciousness washed over her. Exposing this vulnerability to a stranger felt like a betrayal of her carefully crafted online persona.
Her fingers fumbled with the buckles, the cold metal biting into her skin. As she removed the leg, the stark difference between her strong, tanned leg and the pale, scarred one beneath sent a shiver down her spine.
Just then, a thought struck her. What if he recognized it? What if his reaction wasn't what she hoped for?
Taking a steadying breath, she tossed both the prosthetic and her backpack down to Elias with a thud.
"Here," she said, her voice barely a whisper.
Elias caught them effortlessly. He didn't comment, but a flicker of understanding seemed to pass through his unfocused gaze. He secured the backpack to his own and carefully placed the prosthetic leg on a nearby rock, out of sight.
"Ready?" he asked again, his voice gentle.
This time, Aria nodded, her chin held high. Despite her fear, she wouldn't let it show. With Elias belaying her descent, she carefully maneuvered down the rock face, using her remaining leg and the rope for support.
It was a slow, laborious process, the wind whipping at her exposed face. But with each handhold, each step down, relief grew stronger. Finally, with Elias' help, she landed on a small, secure ledge.
Exhaustion pulled at her limbs, but a wave of gratitude washed over her. "Thank you," she said, her voice sincere.
Elias offered a small smile. "No problem. Now, let's get you out of the cold."
He helped her onto a more stable part of the ledge, leading her away from the rock face. As they walked towards the inviting glow of the cabin, Aria stole a glance at his profile.
"You know," she began hesitantly, "you play beautiful music."
Elias stopped in his tracks, a curious expression on his face. "You can hear it from here?"
Aria felt a blush creep up her neck. "Yeah, it was amazing. Like a beacon in the storm."
A ghost of a smile reappeared on Elias' lips. "I'm glad it helped."
They continued walking in comfortable silence. The storm seemed to be subsiding, the wind losing its bite. As they reached the cabin door, a question gnawed at Aria.
"There's something... different about your eyes," she blurted out before she could stop herself. "Are you..."
Elias turned to her, his gaze meeting hers for a fleeting moment before looking away. "I'm blind," he said simply.
Aria's heart skipped a beat. Blind. This kind, gentle man who climbed mountains and played beautiful music couldn't see.
A mixture of surprise and newfound respect welled up inside her. This wasn't just a random encounter with a helpful stranger. It was a meeting that challenged her own perceptions and sparked a sense of intrigue that went beyond the immediate situation.
Standing on the porch of the cabin, Aria realized her journey down the mountain had just begun, and it wasn't just about physical descent. It was about facing her own vulnerabilities and discovering what truly mattered.
