Day 1 | Keith

The worst came to pass and I'm stranded in a city filled with zombies. That's all there is to it. It doesn't help that this Lance guy is a total asshole.

——————————

The smell of hot asphalt and an early morning filled the air as Keith walked down the busy street. People rushing to and from work bumped against his shoulders leaving an uncomfortable lingering in their wake. Keith pulled his hat down so their eyes wouldn't make their way to his.

He didn't like the crowded mornings, nor the crowded afternoons, nor the evenings. Living a few miles away from the town offered him the solace of self-imposed isolation, but the police station holding his close friend insisted on being in the middle of the human-infested city. He supposed it couldn't be helped.

His boots clicked against the slide-walk, it was a pleasant sound that distracted him from the working man who had just passed him muttering a grunt which was supposed to be an apology. Keith let out an exasperated sigh as he turned the corner.

He's been following this route routinely, once a month to be specific. Shiro, the local sheriff, always promised one day he would visit Keith at his homestead but that day hadn't come to pass yet. Keith understood his duties kept him chained to the city so he didn't mind coming to him instead.

Once he arrived at the police station, he was greeted by the bell chime at the top of the door. He remembered commenting how that was far too cheery for such a dreaded place, Shiro simply gave him an awkward smile and left it there. It wasn't so bad anymore.

The strong scent of coffee grabbed his nose and dragged it to its source, the path brought him to the front desk attendant, Adam. He was sitting behind a glass screen throwing a small wave to Keith. Keith nodded back.

"Morning, Kogane. Lookin' for Shiro?"

Adam said setting the cup down and leaning back in his chair. Keith nodded again.

"Yeah, is he here?"

"Fraid' not. He just left on an emergency call a few blocks down. He'll be back in no time though, just a case of some suspicious activity in an alleyway."

Adam mused adjusting his glasses. Keith processed his words and crossed his arms glancing outside.

"You can wait here if you'd like."

Adam added with a small tired smile. It was a kind offer, Adam was a kind guy but a quiet one similar to Keith himself so he knew it'd be painfully awkward to sit here in silence with him without Shiro to instigate a conversation between them all.

"Thanks but I'll just come back later. See you, Adam."

"Have a good one."

They exchanged goodbyes and Keith turned towards the door. A large van sped down the road outside the station. You could hear the excited cheers from the inside from inside. Keith grimaced.

The side that he saw, albeit briefly had a large baseball bat on it and was adorned with the name of the supposed team inside.

'Garrison. Weird name for a sports team.' Keith thought to himself.

As he walked out, a small crowd of people ran after the bus cheering. He figured there was a game happening. That explained the traffic and additional people in town.

As the group ran past him Keith looked down to the ground to avoid their faces. However, as they passed, a small pearl of red fell to the ground.

'Blood?'
