Melanie Antionette Smith did everything to put a smile on her kids faces.
After her first husband cheated on her, she started to change. You see, her first husband was the father of Elijah, Naveah and Normani. While her second husband was Kasey's and the twins dad.
If you were to ask Melanie if she could go back in time knowing what would happen, would she get married still, the answer would be yes. Yeah her husband was an asshole but her kids never needed for anything and that's all that mattered to her.
When Melanie was eight months pregnant with Normani, Jason Smith, their father cheated on her with some woman from another state. Melanie left with her kids and never looked back. Jason never looked for them, it was almost like he didn't care. Consider he was living a double life, of course he didn't care. See what Melanie didn't know was that Jason already had a family when he met her. And then after he "married" her, he found another woman and completely repeated the process he did with Melanie. It was like he was just trying to collect Pokémon's.
Melanie created a decent life for her first three children, and then she met Chase Jones.
He treated her amazing, he even been a better father to her first three children then Jason was.
However when it came to getting married, she kept her maiden name, which was ironically smith. Chase didn't like that. When they had Kasey together, Melanie gave her the last name smith. Chase didn't like that.
After giving birth to Kasey, Chase started to change. He would beat on Melanie until she passed out. When she would wake up, she would put a smile on her face like those activities did not occur the day before.
One night, Chase came home drunk and the kids were sleep. Melanie was trying to get him to be quiet which ultimately resulted in her getting beat on. He threatened her that if she made any sounds, he would do the kids next.
He forced hisself on her when she said countless of times how she didn't want to have sex.
What he failed to realize of that she was going through postpartum. Naveah, being the oldest, took care of her siblings knowing something was wrong with their mother when she wouldn't put a smile on her face anymore and when she barely left her bedroom.
The kids did their best to go see her but Chase would just tell them mommy was resting.
When it came time to deliver the twins, Melanie barely had any fight in her. When she pushed Amira out, she fell in and out of consciousness. Luckily Naveah was there to help.

"Mommy, I changed the babies," Naveah said happily
"That's wonderful Naveah. Listen baby," Melanie started off with a whisper
"Yes mommy"
"I need you to take the money from mommy's secret place, get your siblings, take my car, and leave"
"What about you"
"Mommy doesn't feel well so she has to stay"
"Where do we go"
"Go where ever your heat desires. Just never look back. No matter what know that I love you guys and mommy tried her hardest but she doesn't have any more fight left in her. Please take care Naveah baby. I love you guys and I will always love you guys."
