CHAPTER 02
REAL LIFE

REAL LIFE

kalea tapped her pen against her desk repeatedly as she tried to come up with the correct answer to one of the last questions on her biology homework.

she was almost done with her first year of college at the university of hawai'i at mānoa. she was currently majoring in marine biology as she loved the ocean and sea life itself. though kalea knew she wanted to major in marine biology, she wasn't quite sure what exactly she wanted to do with it just yet, or if she wanted to do anything with the major at all.

the girl always performed well in school, no matter what she was going through. when she was a senior in high school, her parents had gotten a divorce after her mom found out that her dad had an affair. it angered kalea to no end that her dad would do something like that, but she was a forgiving person and it was hard for her to ever stay mad at someone.

even then, she had to stay with her dad in hawaii so she could finish school. she had also already enrolled herself into the university of hawai'i at mānoa, so she really had no choice at the end of the day.

shortly after her parents divorced, her mom ended up moving to california to get away from him. she had also gotten a job offer in los angeles, and she was more than happy to take it. she, of course, felt awful for moving so far away from her daughter, but she felt it was for the best.

kalea's mom promised that she could visit every other week if she wanted to, and ever since she made that promise, kalea visited her every other week.

it wasn't until now that kalea hadn't been back to california for three weeks now, and it was slowly killing her. not only because she couldn't see her mom, but she couldn't see her best friend.

because of kalea's frequent visits to california, she made friends with a few people while she was there, along with her current best friend, teagan. the two met each other one day when kalea was out surfing at venice beach. teagan had approached the girl and ever since, the two have been connected at the hip.

she was counting down the days until she headed back to california to see her best friend and her mother. she was so eager to see them that it was hard to focus on her homework.

a sudden knock was at her bedroom door, causing the girl to jump a little.

"kalea.."

"come in," she called, pausing her music that was softly playing in the background.

her door swung open slowly, revealing her stepmom. kalea was never a fan of her stepmom, mostly due to the fact that she's the one her dad had the affair with. no matter how nice she was to her, deep down, she couldn't stand her.

"dinner's ready," she smiled.

kalea looked back towards her biology homework, "i'm not hungry." she hit play on her music and continued working on her homework.

her stepmom quickly got the hint and carefully shut the door.

of course, kalea felt bad for not liking her because she knew she was a sweet woman. the only thing holding her back was the fact that she helped ruin her parents' marriage and continued to marry her dad, acting like nothing ever happened.

if she could live with her mom, she would. unfortunately, her schooling was the one thing holding her back from staying in california.

"this actually makes no sense," kalea muttered, falling back in her chair.

she looked outside her window, seeing her surfboard standing up against a post. she contemplated whether she should take a break for a few or not, but ultimately decided to do so.

she stood up from her desk chair, turning off her music. she quickly changed into a black one piece swimsuit and made her way out the house. in the process of doing so, she passed the kitchen where her dad and stepmom were eating dinner.

"your mom said you weren't hungry," her dad stated.

kalea furrowed her brows, "she's not my mom, and i'm not eating."

before anyone had the chance to say another word, kalea left the house and made her way towards the shore, grabbing her board along the way.

for some reason, she had a lot on her mind today. whenever she needed a break mentally, she always turned to surfing; it was something that she had grown up to enjoy. in fact, at one point she had considered getting into it competitively, but decided against it as she wanted it to be something that she could turn to whenever she needed a break.

surfing was something she held very close to her heart, especially since her best friend shared the same interest in it as her. that was another thing she had looked forward to whenever she would visit california. the two of them would always find a day or two to go surfing.

since it had been three weeks since she surfed with teagan, she was super ecstatic to be back in a few days. there was nothing she looked forward to more than to see her mom and her best friend.
