Once he left the Hall of Covenants, Fra' Kaistos made his way to his laboratory. He hadn't understood anything: firstly, from what he had been told, they were going to ask him questions, but the reality was that they hadn't asked him any; secondly, there was the chamberlain who had not made any good impression on him; and thirdly, he had seen that he had a good relationship with Fra' Sabelior. And finally, the Abbot's message.
Before he knew it, the dog had followed him. The molosser had gone out behind him in silence, and after walking behind him up to the second floor of the courtyard, they both climbed the stairs to the rooms in the tower. After a while, they both felt that Awlin had joined them, and by the time they had reached the door of his laboratory, they realized that there was someone waiting for them inside.
When he opened the door, Fra' Kaistos' face lit up: it was an old acquaintance, one of his companions from the Great Monastery of Os.
- Arturiano, what a joy to see you again! - They gave each other a big hug. Arturiano, of medium height, blond and thin, had not taken vows, he had only studied there and later had dedicated himself to commerce. He had married and already had 4 children. They wrote to each other regularly, but since the monk had left Os they had not seen each other again. He was what anyone would call a bookworm. He'd always loved puns and coded messages, though in truth they'd always been just as a hobby.
- I say the same thing, Frey. I see you well, though the work has left you even thinner than I remember.
Frey laughed, much more relaxed, and they both sat down in two chairs beside the large table where he was studying, full of books, glass jars, and ceramic jars with various substances and mixtures. There were also insects or different types of batrachians.
- Why has you come to see me?
Arthurian's face clouded, and Frey saw it.
- I was very worried about some things. We need to talk calmly. I wrote to the Abbot as recommended by Fra' Calixtiano, the librarian of Os, because we have heard some troubling news. He salutes you, he remembers you very well.
- Oh, I remember him well too! Always so patient with every student and their doubts in the texts. I hope I will see Fra' Calixtiano again, he is so talented as a person and as a teacher. Well, you know, you couldn't have arrived at a more complicated moment. This last day has been especially so.
- I've heard something since I've been here.
Both the dog and Awlin were following the conversation. Awlin, in particular, was especially confused: he had long felt that something serious was going to happen. When he saw the snake, he thought that was it, but after he had seen the one who had been called "Chamberlain" (although he didn't think that was his name as a human), he had seen that he was wrong.
