Chapter 19:Sibling Rivalry

June 2001

Toni's Pov
Wassup y'all, ain't talk in a minute. Lemme give y'all a rundown right quick. My family and Janet's family collided so now we all cool. Today Janet's family is having a little cookout. Nothing special
just black people and food.  Anyways, as of right now,I'm in my bedroom tryna find something to where while Janet is in bubbas room fixing her hair. After a whole 25 minutes,I just settled on a white v-neck t-shirt with some black ripped jeans finishing it with white chucks. I left out the room and went to bubbas room. Janet was just finishing up Jasmine's hair as it is in a half up half down style with her little edges. "Ooh look at my pretty girl"I said catching her attention. She turned and cheesed. She ran to me with her arms up. "Dada look mommy made me pretty"she said pointing to Janet. I smiled as Janet blushed. I put Jasmine down and she ran out the room. I walked up to Janet pulling her into me. "Hey beautiful"I said. This time she didn't look away, she stared into my eyes. "Hi"she said softly. Something is wrong. I sat down at the edge of the bed and held her waist. "what's wrong ma, you look bothered"I said. She shrugged and looked away. "I'm fine"she said. Her face says it all, she ain't fine. Well she is but-y'all know what I'm tryna say.  I nodded and stood up. Imma let it go for now. "come on and let see what this child doing"I said reaching my hand out. Janet chuckled and tangled her hand in mine. I kissed her passionately then pulled away. She smiled. There's that smile I want to see.

Janet's Pov
I didn't wanna tell Toni what's really  wrong because I do not need her to act out. We went downstairs after grabbing everything we need. "Finally"Jasmines voice said. She was standing by the door obviously impatient. We just shook our head as we looked at our child. Yes I said OUR child. I just laughed and grabbed her hand leading us out the house while Toni locked up. I buckled jasmine in her booster seat and gave her a snack to munch on. Toni came open my door and helped me get in since we're in one of her trucks. She started the truck and pulled out of the driveway. She placed her right hand in its designated spot which is on my thigh. "are we go see gran gran and mom mom"jasmine asked referring to our mothers. I laughed. "yea bub we're almost there"I answered back. It's true, mother doesn't live very far from Toni's. In fact, it only takes like  30 minutes to get to mothers house. Jasmine squealed at the fact that she gets to see her grandmothers. This kid is something else.

Toni's Pov
I just listened as Janet and Jasmine had a full blown conversation about me. They dragging me with words. "Dada is a meanie"Jasmine said. Janet just laughed and pecked my lips as I pouted. "Dada isn't mean when she gives you ice cream now is she"I said proudly. She stayed silent then just busted out laughing. This definitely is my kid. I shook my head as I pulled into the driveway. Damn all these cars. I got out and went my ass on Janet's side and helped her out then Jasmine. I grabbed her bag and put it on my shoulder. "You go head on in the house bub, we'll be behind you"I said. She nodded and basically sprinted towards the house. It was already unlocked so she just opened the door and closed it.  I turned to Janet as she play with her hands. "Wanna tell me what's wrong now"I asked trapping her against the truck door. She sighed and looked up at me.  "My sister. Latoya to be exact. We may be sisters but she always brings up the things that she has or had. She tries to compete with me especially at family gatherings. She likes to put attention on her when apparently to her everything is about me. I'm tired of it, she won't stop and I don't wanna argue with her anymore"she explained. Latoya does seem like the type to do that but I guess i'll have to see for myself. I nodded and pulled her into me. "You gone be alright. You'll have me to back you up and i'm pretty sure your other siblings are tired of it too"I said. She nodded and pulled away still with a wary look on her face. "you're gonna be alright, okay"I reassured her.  Her does eyes stared at me then she leaned up and kissed me. "I love you" she said with a soft smile. "I love you more"I said and grabbed her hand. "Now let's go eat, a nigga  starving"I said pulling her towards the house. Janet just shook her head and followed me into the house. Glad she's in a better mood.
