"MATE" Kai screams in my head as I look at this girl mouth agape in fear.

She smells like lavender and cedar wood. Though there's a rotten aroma surrounding her, almost like some small animal has died recently in this area.

As the young girl scrambles to her feet, she drops a stick from her fingers and runs inside the cabin.

I've never seen her before. Never smelled her before. She must be the foster human the Hinz are taking care of. I mindlink Luke to obtain a background check on the human foster child in the Hinz's care. I want to know everything about my little mate as soon as possible. Those big hazel eyes and strawberry blond hair already have me in a chokehold.

I hear two doors shut inside the cabin, and her heartbeat rises alarmingly high before slowing down. Feeling content that she's no longer panicking, I inch closer to the stick she dropped. It's still smoking and smells like a rotten animal. Marijuana. My little mate was smoking weed. I growl. This is why I hate humans - always looking for something to alter their minds and emotions.

I bury the Marijuana stick and run close to what I assume is her window due to the increase of that lovely lavender, cedarwood scent. Listening for a couple minutes, I hear her soft breaths and slow heartbeat. She must have fallen asleep. Oh how I wish she would be in my bed so I could hold her through the night. My cute little mate.

"I have most of a report ready for you, Alpha," Luke mindlinks me.

"Thanks. I'll be right up, " I reply.

Taking one final deep breath inhaling her delicious scent, I head back to the pack house. Shifting and grabbing my shorts left on the back steps, I head up to my office where Luke stands waiting.

"Sooo... why the midnight report on the unhomed human Mr. Boss Man?"

"Luke," I growl, warning him to stay out of my business. I'm his alpha. He should never question my orders.

"Hey, hey now. I'm not judging. Just majorly curious." He smiles.

I sigh. "She's my mate,"

His eyes widen, and a big smile spreads across his face, "No shit! Congrats, man!" He comes to give me a hug, but I hold up my hand to stop him.

"She's human, on drugs, and scared of me. Not really how I wanted this whole mate thing to go." I reply. I trust Luke with my life. He's my best friend. I'll tell him anything, even if it hurts. "Why did the moon goddess pair me with a lowly human addict?" I spit out.

"Not lowly. Mate is perfect. I love mate." Kai bites back at me.

"The moon goddess paired you two together for a reason, bro. Maybe she's not an addict. Maybe it was just a one-time drug usage thing because she's in a scary new place. Look for the positives, " Luke says softly.

I run my hands through my hair, sitting down in my desk chair and sighing deeply.

"I took a quick glance at her report while I was waiting for you. There's not much here but -" Luke mumbles as he hands me the thin manilla folder.

"This is it? That's all you could find on her?" I yell in disbelief.

"Well you only gave me like 20 minutes. You'd think you'd be grateful for anything" Luke grumbles.

"Yes Luke." I sigh again, containing my anger.

"'Thank you Luke.' Oh you are so welcome Alpha. You have a wonderful night now Alpha 'I love you Luke.' I love you too Alpha." Luke jokes at me. I grab whatever is closest to me on my desk, which happens to be a pen, and chuck it at his head as he snickers and leaves me alone.

Idiot. I grumble.
Opening the folder, I take in the information as fast as I can.

Page 1 begins with a picture of my darling little mate in a police station, apparently getting arrested for something. I growl, definitely not pleased with that fact. I read on.

That's it!? Three pages of information. I throw the folder across the room, seeping with rage. How is it that one person can have so little information on them? I've read reports of children younger than her with more information than that! I grab whatever is in hands reach and chuck it across the room.

"Fuck" I roar, shaking the ground with rage. I need to go to her. I need to talk to her. I need my mate. I shift into my wolf, jump through my window, and sprint across the land back to that little cabin. Back to the other half of my soul.

I hear her soft breaths and steady heartbeat from the ground, but it isn't enough to sooth the anger flowing through my body. I shift back into my human form and jump onto the roof outside her window. I hear her but I don't see her. I begin to panic, slowly opening the window as to not frighten her.

Jumping into the room, I look around. I see her crouched in a corner of the room, sleeping on the floor. Why would she not be sleeping on the bed? Did I scare her too much earlier?

I frown at the thought and move to pick her up. She weighs nearly nothing. I can feel her bones through her thin clothes. What happened to her? Kai whimpers in my head.

"Mate needs food. We get mate healthy. Mate will love us." He repeats pacing in a circle.

As I go to lay her down in the bed, she let's out a sigh and grabs onto my arm, sending shocks of pleasure shooting down my body.

"Shhhh. I've got you Elizabeth. You're safe now. I'll protect you." I whisper to her.

She relaxes her grip on my arm and rolls over in the bed giving me a glimpse of her lower abdomen and back as her sweatshirt rides up. Instantly, I tense. She is covered in deep bruises. Black and blue splotches mark her body along with some raised white scars outlining what looks to be a rectangle.

Kai whimpers again as we look down at our malnourished and abused mate. Poor little one. Who did this to you?

The thought of anyone hurting our dear little mate makes me angry. Jumping between pity and angry, I feel Kai wrestling for control.

"Not now Kai. We need to get away from her before we scare her."

"Scare mate? Mate is hurt! We must protect mate. Mate need comfort!"

Hanging onto the last bit of sanity I have, I jump back out of her window. Softly closing it and taking one last glance at her beautiful face, I take off to the woods letting Kai take control. We need to run off some of this steam before we attack the first person we see.

As I run, I hear the smallest intake of breath behind me, turning around to see those big hazel eyes staring me down as I run away.

Mine.
