-PROLOGUE-

Mission Start

1st April

A tall boy with striking red hair and golden mercury eyes, and a short boy with long blue hair and azure eyes. Akabane Karma and Shiota Nagisa sat at the very back of the crowded bus, silently minding their own businesses; Karma playing his Gameboy, and Nagisa reading his novel whilst listening to music through tiny earbuds.

Nagisa POV

The bus slowly came to a stop with several similar buses pulling in behind ours. They were just as crowded as the one we were currently in, filled with students wearing the same uniform as ours.

I pocketed my earbuds and kept my book just as Karma shut down his Gameboy and stretched his arms, yawning lazily.

“You look incredibly tired already, and we haven’t even stepped in the school,” I remarked, glancing at his frown and furrowed brows.

Karma shrugged roughly and whisper-complained, “What’d you expect? I was looking forward to skipping high school altogether to focus on assignments, but then that guy just had to send us here for the next three years!”

By ‘that guy’, he was referring to Karasuma-sensei, who was also our superior.

I sighed and shook my head. “It’s not like we’re actually gonna be here for three years. We’ll leave as soon as we finish the job.”

“Sure, if it’s that easy…” he muttered.

“Sorry? What was that?”

“Nothing, let’s hurry. I wanna get this over with,” he said with a dismissive wave, already making his way to the front of the bus.

A girl with long lavender hair with a single braid on her left, tied with a black ribbon, and purple eyes got off the bus as I filed into the line behind Karma. I held my breath, finding myself oddly mesmerized by the girl.

“Nagisa? What’re you daydreaming for? Hurry up!”

Karma’s impatient voice startled me, and I scrambled off the bus to run after Karma, who was already going towards the school gate, a grandiose arch carved from natural rock.

The girl from before was nowhere to be seen.

As we walked along the pathway towards the venue of the entrance ceremony, I couldn’t help but look around the campus in a daze.

The buildings were pristine and well maintained, the walkways spacious and lined with intricately trimmed bushes. The trees around the campus provided shade for students during sunny days, and there were even benches installed under them for those who want to relax and read outside.

Karma hummed beside me, gazing around, too.

“Heh~ It’s not an elite school for nothing, eh? Living a life of luxury in this school for three years doesn’t seem so bad.”

I smiled at his words.

“Careful, Karma. You may enjoy yourself too much till you forget why we’re even here.”

Karma POV

Even though it’s an elite school, its entrance ceremony was just as boring as any other school’s. God, it took everything in me not to fall asleep halfway through, listening to the principal drone on and on about ‘how much he appreciates our choosing this school to study at’ and all.
