God views Israel as his son.
In the old testament Yahweh and even still today he views Israel as his son and as his first born son (not to be confused with the supreme Sonship of Jesus Christ unto God the Father, but that's a topic for another day).
Bible scripture that prove Israel is Yahweh's son and firstborn son: Exodus 4:22-23.
Just like a father, God is viewed as a father to Israel his chosen people.
Just like a father loves his son, Yahweh loves his chosen people the Jews.
Just like a father tries to teach his son to be a proper and good man, Yahweh in the old testament was teaching Israel his chosen people to be strong and courageous and to be a faithful nation unto him.
