NATALYA'S POV
As I walked into Mariah's office, I tried to calm myself down, repeating
It's fine it's okay I'm fine I'm okayLike a mantra in my head.
My mind kept wandering back to Mariah's husband, though. What did he want from me?
Why did he want me to personally deliver the coffee to his wife's office?
And why did he have to be so... distracting?
I couldn't help but notice how his piercing blue eyes seemed to see right through me, how his chiseled jawline and chiseled features made him look like a model. But I shook my head, trying to focus on the task at hand.
I knocked gently on the door, waiting for a response to enter. "Enter!" Mariah's high-pitched, nasally voice commanded from inside.
I pushed the door open, and it squeaked in protest.
"Good morning, Ma'am. I was asked to deliver a coffee to your husband,"
I said, trying to sound confident, but my eyes were fixed on my shoes.Wow, I have really small feet-
I thought, trying to distract myself.Mariah's response was curt.
"Well, okay, what are you waiting for then? A red carpet? Drop the coffee and leave!"
"Yes Ma'am, sorry ma'am"I quickly placed the coffee on the table and turned to leave. I slightly closed the door and wanted to walk away but not before I heard Andrei's smooth, deep voice say,
"Why are you being so hard on the girl, Zhena?" (wife)."Because she's so slow, and it's fucking irritating me" She gritted through her teeth.
I didn't wait to hear Andrei's response. I quickly left the office, not wanting to get involved in their marital affairs.A few hours later, my shift was finally over.
Thank heavens!
I quickly cleaned up the coffee shop, locked up, and headed home.
It was currently 8:30 pm, and I was walking quickly, trying to get home before dark. Mariah's place was located in a safe and posh neighborhood, but mine...
Not so much.
I fell asleep to gunshots and police sirens every night and woke up to screaming crackheads every morning.
So, I wouldn't exactly say it was the best neighborhood.
I plugged in my Airpods and started listening to music as I walked home.
I looked up at the sky it's probably gonna rain soon.
Snapping out of thoughts, I resumed walking, but then started hearing footsteps behind me.I looked back to see a tall figure trailing after me. I sped up my pace, but the footsteps kept getting closer.
God please God please God please not today.
I prayed in my head.
I had already received enough shit from my boss and I am so not in the mood to get mugged right now.I looked up ahead and saw my building just a few minutes away, and I felt a surge of relief.
But my joy was short-lived.
The man following me had come painstakingly close causing me to start running.
I thought I had escaped until I felt myself tackled to the ground, and I felt a wave of fear wash over me.
"Give me everything you've got in that bag, pretty girl, or I'll just have to take what's in-between your legs," he sneered.
His pungent stench of B.O and alcohol made me almost throw up.
I struggled to throw him off me, but he was too strong.
"I don't have any money, leave me alone," I pleaded, trying to keep my voice steady."You don't have any money yeah? Then you're gonna pay another way."
He began to force my legs open, causing me to kick and scream.
He straddled me and leaned in to kiss me and I closed my eyes.If I can't see him he doesn't exist.
Suddenly, the man fell to the ground with a thud.
I turned to look at what at happening and was shocked and terrified to see a bullet hole between his eyes.
A pair of black dress shoes showed up in my line of vision.
I looked up to see Andrei standing over me, his eyes blazing with anger."You shouldn't walk around alone at night, malyshka," he said, his voice low and menacing.
I looked up at him, my heart racing, and felt a shiver run down my spine.
What did he mean by that? Was he threatening me or protecting me?
And why did I feel so drawn to him, even after everything that had happened? I didn't have the answers to all the questions running around in my head.
As I looked up at him, I saw something in his eyes that I couldn't quite explain. It was a mix of concern and... something else.
Something that made my heart race and my pulse quicken. I felt a flutter in my chest, and I knew I was in trouble.
"Come on, malyshka," he said, offering me his hand. "I'll walk you home."
I took his hand, feeling a spark of electricity as our palms touched. And I knew that I was in for a wild ride.
