"I think I'm going to be sick," Kehlani frowns at the kissing newlyweds.
Kehlani Moore is not your typical seventeen year old. She does not obsess over boys or want to talk about the school's biggest hotties. No. In fact she despises love. Just the thought of it makes her uneasy. She believes it is a risk being taken if someone chooses to try and love someone else. (In a romantic way, of course. She isn't totally heartless.) Kehlani has never understood how people can just be okay with the possibility of being worried sick over who you love, being heartbroken over them, and so many tears being wasted over someone clearly not worth it. But you can't help it because you love them. It is so scary to her. So much time and energy can be sacrificed for nothing in return. You can be told you were used. Mind games can become a constant thing because of lack of respect. A person can change for the worse. Cheating is a thing. A very common thing. You could never be seen as an equal. So, you change to fit their needs. Completely obliterating who you are just for you to be "crazy" in the end. Nothing will ever satisfy their needs because they aren't satisfied with themselves. But how will you find someone who is actually mature? Kehlani asks herself this routinely, knowing that there is simply no hope for the guys she is always around. They will not mature until they are old and gray. By that time she will have become an old cat lady. There is no point in waiting for the guys she knows to turn into the men she needs.
Currently at a wedding. Currently crashing a wedding are two best friends. Kehlani and her best friend since middle school, Evelyn Baker. An hour ago they neither knew this is where they would end up. The plan came to be when Kehlani's grandmother saw the two girls bored in her kitchen (eating all her snacks). So the still-young-at-heart grandmother offered the idea of crashing a wedding she knew about but wasn't invited to. A friend of a friend's neighbor's daughter's wedding. Got that? Ke was reluctant at first but was rather quickly convinced when Evelyn used clever buzz words. Such as, "but Ke, it's on my bucket list... live a little... we don't know anyone there..." You get the jist. It's a pretty good story before their senior year too. A bittersweet occurrence in everyone's lives. Bitter in Kehlani's case since she has no clue of what to do with her life after graduating. But totally sweet as high school sucks.
"Shh," Evelyn bumps her elbow into Ke's side. "This is a beautiful moment."
Her eyes brim with tears but none manage to slip. Kehlani just rolls her eyes at her empathetic friend and claps uncomfortably along with all the other guests to try to look normal. To not draw any attention away from the wedding, they sat in the very back row. It didn't really stop the few weird stares they got. Once the wedding party walks back down the aisle the officiant is left to announce, "Make your way to the white barn for the reception,." All of the friends and family invited start to make their way there. Quickly, the only nauseous girl there grabs Evelyn's arm to make an easy escape out of here back to the comfort of her grandmother's home. "What are you doing, Ke?" Evelyn questions with a sweet smile.
"Aren't we leaving now? You got to crash a wedding. Now let's go." Nodding her head back towards the parking lot. There's a pit growing in Kehlani's stomach, knowing her friend too well, she knows exactly what is about to be said. With each guest that passes them to the gorgeous white barn that is playing Taylor Swift, the pit in her stomach grows more and more.
"I think we should stay."
There it is. Evelyn has always been an opportunist. Kehlani not so much, except one time in her life, but that was one time long ago. There's a few curses made under her breath before turning back to the smug blonde with her arms crossed. She is ready for Kehlani's whines, protests, for her to stand her ground. Or as Ke likes to say "stand on business." Kehlani opens her mouth to start but decides it's more effective to just turn around and head the opposite direction of every single person here.
