As I walked home from Addie's house, I looked at my phone. Ugh. 6:00 already? I jogged the rest of the way home, wondering why Mom or Dad never called me. I hiked up the steps to the front door and twisted the key into the lock.

When the door swung open, I yelled "Mom, sorry I'm late! What's for dinner?" No response. Then I saw them. Mom was sitting next to some guy in a business suit and Dad was seated in the rocking chair by the fireplace. "Welcome home dear!" Mom said nervously. "Wendy, why don't you go up to your room, sweetie?" Dad half-pleaded.

Heading up the stairs I wondered why Dad called me sweetie. He hasn't done that in years. "Whatever" I thought to myself. Opening my bedroom door, I noticed a green slip of paper. There were a few words scrawled out. It read:

WENDY GIBSON,

I AM RICHARD DONNIGAN. I AM HERE TO COLLECT YOU AS A CHILD LABORER IN MY COAL MINES. YOU WILL NEVER SEE YOUR FAMILY AGAIN. HOWEVER, IF YOUR PARENTS DO NOT AGREE TO SELLING YOU TO ME, I WILL MURDER ALL OF YOU. AS SOON AS YOU READ THIS MESSAGE, YOU ARE TO COME DOWNSTAIRS AND SIGN THE PAPERWORK. THE CLOCK IS TICKING.

Oh my God. I flopped down onto my bed and wept. Looking over the note a few times, I figured up a plan to keep my family safe.
