CHAPTER TWO
Alyssa Solace
I woke up to the repetitive beeping sound of my alarm, I groaned and reached over to turn it off.
I don't know why my mother insists I wake up at 7.30 everyday despite the fact I have literally nothing going on in my life.
And that scares me.
What if my fathers business randomly goes bust and he loses his money?
My mother would never be caught working a day in her life, she has a backwards mindset of believing women should cook and clean for their husbands. I think that's the only reason she and my father are married, they're interdependent on each other.
He gives her money to buy nice things and in return she cooks him dinner every night and deep cleans the house each day.
There's no love in their relationship.
Liam always makes fun of me for reading cheesy romance novels. But you can't blame a girl for trying to believe in a love that she never saw around her.
A love she has only read in the pages of a book.
A love she will never experience.
I snapped out of my thoughts when my mother walked into my bedroom, not knocking as per usual.
"What are you still doing in bed? Get up, men don't like lazy women." My mother said, her tongue laced with venom.
I didn't answer, instead swinging my legs over the side of the bed and pulling myself up to stand. I could see my mother scowling at my pyjamas of choice, a pair of black shorts hidden under a very oversized grey shirt.
"God Alyssa, don't you want to find yourself a husband? You need to buy some pretty silk pyjamas." My mother said whilst rolling her eyes.
I never got along with my mother.
I never got along with either of my parents really. My mother was a snob who would rather be dead than caught wearing anything other than a knee length tight dress and black heels. My father was work obsessed and didn't have time for anything other than his business.
I did love my parents, I just didn't like them.
"Anyway that's an issue for another day. Today Liam will be bringing you to look for a dress for your fathers work event in two weeks time." My mother says, walking over to my vanity and bending down to check that her mascara is perfect.
"Seriously? That's in two weeks I have loads of time! Plus I was just going to wear my old dress from Thanksgiving a few years ago." I replied. It's not that I didn't like shopping, I just hated going to my fathers work events.
Why does a biotech company need to have fancy masquerade balls as work events?
"Alyssa I will not hear it! You will do as I say. That old dress of yours is hideous." My mother scrunched up her face as she spoke to me.
"Antonia had the same dress." I stared into her eyes as I spoke.
My mother took a slow breath in before quickly exhaling and regaining her composure, "She did. And it was hideous too. Hideous clothes cause for a hideous person, Alyssa. Get ready you will be leaving at 9."
I watched as my mother left my room without another word. I could feel tears pricking at the corners of my eyes just from thinking about her, hearing her name.
God I missed her.
My sister Antonia ran away three years ago when she was 20.
Me and Antonia were best friends, she was so protective of me and not in the cruel way that my father is. Instead, she would cover my ears whilst my parents argued, lend me her favourite books, braid my hair, and push me on the tree swing.
