Dinner plates had been quietly taken away, and now the band was assembling itself on the area just off the large dance floor.
"Just remember that dance you promised me," Freen whispered to Becky.
Freen had to be going completely insane. Becky reminded her or Mon.
Impossible. Because there was one quality that Becky almost radiated, and that was innocence. And Mon had been far from innocent, with her sleek, bobbed hair, glossy red lips, and catlike eyeliner.
The two women were like night and day. And yet...
.
.
.Becky's throat tightened as she watched Anda lead Lookkaew out onto the empty dance floor to the beginning strains of "Someone to Watch Over Me," They began theie dance, all eyes on them.
She could sense Freen standing next to her.
"Please don't say anything to ruin the moment," Becky whispered.
"Me? Never."
Becky knew Freen was genuinely happy for her friend.
As Lookkaew left Anda's arms for her father's, and Anda danced with her mother, Becky walked toward the dance floor, her arm through Freen's.
"Remember," She whispered as they stepped onto the dance floor, "You've promised me an entire other dance."
"I know."
And then she felt her arms come around her, and they felt so right. She leaned against her and discovered that she was just as good at dancing as she was at other one-on-one activities. They moved to the music as if they'd been dancing together for years.
And she knew that this, this phyiscal contact, this dancing, was what might give her away.
Before she could worry further, she felt a masculine tap on her shoulder. Turning, she recognized one of the men from the bachelor party the night before. He gave Freen a look that seemed to say, May I? And while Becky noticed with a thrill that Freen didn't seem happy relinquishing her, she let her go without a struggle.
She turned to her new partner and couldn't help noticing how his hands just didn't feel right, touching her.
"Hi," She said brightly. "I'm Becky."
.
.
.Freen stood on the sidelines, watching Becky dance with her friend Billy.
Something was not right.
Something had happened when she'd put her arms around her. She'd never touched this woman in her entire life except to offer her arm, yet when she'd put her arms around her and started to dance with her, she'd felt as if she were coming home.
Something was up. She sensed she didn't have all the facts. It was something she wasn't quite aware of, but that sixth sense that had served her so well in business was alerting her.
She stood to the side of the dance floor, watching her.
Once the dance with Billy ended, Becky remembered another promise she'd made to Lookkaew, one she would have no trouble keeping.
Lookkaew's oldest brother, Mos, had a Daughter named Aylin.
And Aylin considered herself something of an awkward dork. Becky remembered her own dorky days all too well, so when Lookkaew had asked her if she would mind singling her out and dancing with her, she'd been totally enthusiastic about the idea.
"Fine with me," She'd told her friend.
Lookkaew pointed out tall, painfully skinny, and somewhat geeky seventeen-year-old Aylin to her earlier during the dinner. She had no trouble locating her, standing with a group of her peers.
"Hi," She said, coming up to the young woman, "Aylin?" She peered at her suspiciously, and Becky suddenly knew that this teenager had been made the butt of a joke more often than she would have liked.
"Yeah," Aylin said cautiously, and Becky caught the glint of braces in her mouth.
"I'm your aunt Lookkaew's friend, Becky, from England," Becky held out her hand and Aylin took it, cautiously.
Those glinting teeth broke into a slow smile. "My dad used to tell us about all the trouble you got Lookkaew into at school," She could see the awed respect in her quiet brown eyes.
"He only knows the half of it! Do you want to dance?" Becky held her breath, waiting for her answer. Aylin have been standing in a group of young people, and she could only guess that they were brothers, sisters, cousins, and friends. But she could see that Aylin's stock had just risen in their eyes, because an 'older woman' had asked her to dance.
And better yet, an older woman with a reputation!
"Yeah!" Aylin looked like she couldn't believe she'd asked her.
"Fast or slow?"
Aylin grinned down at her, and she saw the faint blush stain her cheekbones.
"Let's go for a fast one!"
.
.
.
'Very nice,' though Freen as she watched Becky approach Aylin. She knew the kid was painfully shy, and she grudgingly had to admire Becky for bringing her out.The band broke into a rendition of "White Wedding," and she watched as Aylin led Becky out onto the dance floor. They began to dance, and Freen had to admit that Aylin wasn't that bad.
But Becky was stunning.
She certainly knew her way around the dance floor. Freen watched her body move, sway to the music, her laughter and enjoyment contagious. A tendril of light brown hair had escaped her upswept hairstyle, and the slight messiness of it suited her. She laughed, her head going back, and one of the small rosebuds woven into her hair fell to the dance floor.
Freen narrowed her eyes.
Something seemed very familiar. She felt as if something were starting to click into place, just on the edge of her consciousness.
The floor around the two dancers started to clear as their moves became more elaborate and intricate and people stopped dancing to watch. Who would've thought that Aylin loved to dance or was so good at it? As Freen got a much better view of the two of them, all the emotion inside her stilled.
'Becky.......Mon.....Becky........Mon...'
Freen didn't know how. She didn't know why. She only knew that the woman she had spent the night with and had the most incredible sex of her life with was the same woman who was out on that dance floor, having a wild time with Lookkaew's nephew.
Freen suddenly knew that the woman Rico would be sending over would not be the same woman she'd been with last night.
She'd just found Mon.
