Grandma's house is the most safest place I know. It's the only place I know where I can move freely without consequences.

"D'Saniiiiiii Marble Watkins!!! Get in here and clean up these dishes!"

Well...almost freely.

I stretched before coming out to see what dishes my grandmother was talking about. I came to the kitchen to see only a fork and a plate that I didn't leave in there.

"Grandma, I didn't put that in there." I said.

"Do you live in this house?"

"Yes-"

"Do you have a room in this house?""Yes mam-"

"Oh okay! Then go ahead and clean them dishes. I don't recall telling you I didn't put that diaper on when it was time to change ya."

I quietly exhaled before I began cleaning the dishes. One thing about my grandmother, she sure loves to rant when stuff not done correctly in her house.

"And just to give you a heads up D, your mama, your sister and that man of your mothers is coming by today."

I sucked my teeth and felt her pluck my lips.

"You opening a can of soda?" She asked looking over her purple framed glasses.

"No. It's just...it's just..."

"Come on now and spill it. I won't live forever to hear this." She said.

"I don't want to see them grandma." I spoke softly with my head down.

There's a reason why I was living with my grandmother. Around last year, I noticed something about my mother's husband that I didn't like. I always felt like he played my sister D'Asia too closely. Although she's my older sister, I still felt it was my duty to protect her.

Well, one day my mom was at work. I planned on bothering D'Asia like I always do. I went in her room to find my mother's husband on top of her. I automatically jumped on him and started to pound on his back thinking he was hurting her. He threw me to the floor and started screaming at me why D'Asia had tears forming in her eyes.

I noticed his pants were down and D'Asia was naked. I knew what I saw was wrong. I maybe 12 but I ain't no dummy. I told my mother what happened: she didn't believe me. She called my grandmother telling her I was making up stories and that she couldn't deal with me living with them because of it.

"I understand baby. But, your mom said she wants to talk to you."

"About what? She thinks I'm a liar. That's why she sent me here to live with you."

"Well...to be honest-" my grandmother started before the doorbell rung.

"I'll go get it. You go change out of your house clothes."

I nodded before running to my room to change. I don't know what my mother has to say to me. To be honest, I wasn't interested. I don't like how she defends that man over everything he does. That man could commit murder in front of her and she would still say she didn't see him do it. It actually makes me mad. It makes me more mad knowing I had to leave my sister behind.

"Come on out your room Dee!" My grandma called after me.

I dragged my feet out of my room as I heard voices in the living room. I rolled my eyes before fully walking out.
