-Oh, my God... I'm... I'm so sorry-. I started to apologize with that guy; Jackie and I crossed the fence into the neighbors yard; usually, we would never enter any private property, but, at a time like that, I believed that the situation warranted it, and I assumed that Sam's parents would understand us if they discovered us there.
-Are you ok?-. I asked him, and I approached offering him a hand to help him stand up.
-Yes, don't worry, i'm fine, it was on purpose-. He said as he stood up.
-On purpose?-.
-I was trying to fake a believable injury, and I think now it will look a little more believable-.
-To skip school or something?-.
-Um, yeah, something like that-. He said ankwardly, I just laughed.
-I'm Robby-.
-Ann-. I heard a bark below us.
-And this little here is Jackie-. I said as I stroked his furry head; I could tell that he was a little tense with that boy, but I didn't give it any importance, Jackie didn't like strange people at all.
-I assumed this belongs to you-. Robby said throwing the ball at me, I tried to catch it but the baby beat me to it and grabbed it with his mouth in the air.
-Lord, he is very skilled-. He said and started caressing him. For a second I was afraid that Jackie was going to bite his hand, or something worst, since that's what he did somethimes when he got like that, and considering that we had never seen him there, he could very well be an intruder; But, luckily for both, he didn't do anything, maybe because I was safe, and between my dad and I we had taught him how to attack to defend ourselves. I was going to ask him what he was doing there, I had to do it, but he asked me first:
-And are you new here? It's just I hadn't seen you here before-.
-Well, my dad and I moved a while ago from Boston-. I noticed that he got nervous with the word "dad".
-That' sounds cool-. Robby said as he picked up his skateboard; This guy didn't seem like a criminal to me or anything like that, but I had to ask the most obvious question:
-Sorry, but I really have to ask you, what are you doing here?-. He looked at me.
-I mean... It's just that we hadn't seen you either-.
-Oh yes, I'm a student at the dojo...-.
-Dojo?-. For God's sake, another dojo?.
-Yes, from Mr. Larusso, and I also work with him in his company, so...-.
Larusso? That last name turned on a little light bulb inside my head, but that would have to wait...
-Anyway, I came to train with him, but he's not here now-.
-Yes, so bad, look, I'm sorry for hitting you, I guess I didn't measure my strength-.
-It's okay, I can tell you have a good arm, at least I didn't fall in the pool-. I laughed again, and suddenly, I heard sounds coming from inside the house.
-I have to go-. I said pointing towards my house.
-Yes, of course, it has been a pleasure meeting you-. I just smiled and left, I had something important to do, see through all my father's old things, I had an old newspaper clipping to find. Could my new neighbor be the newspaper boy that Louisa had told me about at home? I mean, I had never seen him in person, normally, I don't pay much attention to adults here, nor does Dad, although I don't think he would tell me if I recognized him on the streets; and I couldn't remember his name very well either (I had never bothered to read that entire article).
I figured I could look for that thing in peace, since Dad wasn't home, but I was wrong. As soon as I entered my house, my phone rang inside of my pocket, I had received a notification, apparently, Yasmine was going to celebrate her stupid birthday in the canyon, but my notification wasn't about that, it was a message from Aisha and she had everything that Yasmine had written to her crossed out in red, it was about some kind of party that the from Cobra Kai would offer that same afternoon and right in the same place where Yasmine planned to celebrate with her friends (I bet just to annoy her). I wasn't really sure if Aisha had finally forgiven me, or if it was just that she needed more people who hated Yasmine as much as she did, either way, I couldn't miss out on an opportunity like that one, it was too tempting. I grabbed my favorite jacket and served Jackie food and water on his respective plates, I grabbed the keys to the van, I was completely ready for my first party in California, but I was wrong again:
-Are you going somewhere, honey?-.
-Oh, hi, dad, I have news-.
-What are they about?-.
-They invited me to a party-.
-Who?-.
-Aisha-.
-That's great, but I thought you were fighting with her-.
-It was just a little... misunderstanding-. Dad looked at me suspiciously, and asked me what he really wanted to know:
-Are those guys from "Cobra Kai" going to be there?-.
-Maybe...-. Thanks to the tone in which I said it, not even I believed it. He just picked up his phone and there was exactly the same thing that Aisha had sent me.
-Ok, I'm sorry, but, dad, you promised me that I could go to the next party I was invited to-.
-Yes, but that was before those kids took over the school, now they are spreading their stupid false "philosophy" everywhere, I don't want them to infect you-.
-Dad, you know I'm not as impressionable as them, and I know how to take care of myself, please!-. He looked at me with a face that he was not going to give in.
-What if I promise to come back early?-.
-No-.
-And if I promise not to drink or consume anything-.
-That means there will be drinking and other illegal things there, right?-.
-Sh*t-. I whispered.
-I said no-.
-What do I have to do to make you let me go?-.
-The only thing you have to do is not keep insisting, because you won't get out today-.
-C'mon!-. I could only respond by rolling my eyes.
-Give me the keys to the van-.
-But the van is mine-. Dad didn't say anything else, he didn't need to say anything else that he hadn't told me before, that it was for my own good and everything that everyone says, so I had no other alternatives, I gave them to him reluctantly, and he put them in his pants pocket. He tried to soften that "punishment" by saying that that night he would cook me something special and that we would talk to my mother.
At that moment, I wasn't sure what I would do but I knew it wasn't going to stay like this.
I just went to my room and played the music as loud as my speakers would allow me, I was just waiting for him to get distracted or something so I could go get my keys. I was listening to Shawn Mendes for about an hour when I heard the water pouring in the shower I knew I had to take advantage. I knew that between the noise coming from my room and the sound of the shower, Dad wouldn't hear me grab my keys from his pocket (I knew he'd leave them lying on the floor). When I was about to leave, Jackie was already waiting for me at the door, but I was already determined that I was going to that damn party, so I grabbed his ball and threw it as far as I could, and while he was going for it, I would go out. When I had one foot outside the threshold, I looked once again at my house and saw out of the corner of my eye the photo of my great-grandfather and Mr. Miyagi, and I just whispered to them:
-Don't look at me like that... I'm sorry...-. and I closed the door behind me as quietly as I could. On the one hand, I knew that what I was doing was terribly wrong, but, on the other, I wasn't really grounded, dad had promised me and that van was mine, according to him, and that I would have another chance to go to another one of those. parties? and above all, seeing Yasmine as angry as she made me feel, I would just go and come back quickly, and, with luck, I would return before dinner; I had already promised not to drink alcohol, but apparently it wasn't necessary, Miguel had drunk almost all of the beer by himself, I only drank the sodas that Demetri had recommended and I talked for a while with Aisha who was quite relaxed and cheerful at the same time, probably because of the beer. I tried to talk to Demetri a couple of times but he only noticed Yasmine, who was very angry next to the campfire, poor thing; Apparently Miguel had drank all those beers because he was sad that Sam didn't show up, but, when I saw her showed up with that Robby guy, I knew it was better not to get involved. A couple of strange things happened too, I could see Moon and Hawk/Eli kissing, and after that, Moon approached Aisha and me to apologize to us, and I could see that this time he hadn't smoked anything, so I stayed quite satisfied. When I decided that I had enough and was getting bored, I went to tell Aisha that I was going home, when Yasmine approached to threaten her, I honestly didn't pay attention to the stupid things that came out of her mouth, when something better happened that I never imagined.
Everyone started shouting and clapping and I did too, when Aisha looked back at me, I looked strange.
-Are you happy?-
-You gave her what she deserved-.
-I thought you hated these things-.
-Well, I don't like them, but, if you must fight, win-. and Aisha smiled, she seemed happy to receive the opinion of someone who wasn't drunk for a change.I tried to enter the house the same way I left, and there were my two boys, Dad and Jackie, ready to go out to look for me, I must say that Dad took his time to realize that I was not there; I just raised my arms:
-I swear to God I didn't drink anything-.
