Our first weekend in California was very... interesting; the first night, Dad and I ate the first of, I think about fifteen pizzas, (a little souvenir of my mother and from home, so that we wouldn't forget them, and we won't forget to take care of each other either), while watching "Divergent", and Jackie ate happily our leftovers.
Around midnight, we video-called mom to "thank her" and to ask her how Louisa was doing; She said my great-grandmother really missed me, since she considered me as her closest friend. The three of us slept very comfortably on the couch that night, it couldn't have been a better first night in the Valley.
On Saturday, my father did not allow me to go anywhere in my van, always remembering that little group of girls with that beautiful beaten toy and the fear that they might hit me, because even after all those repairs that Dad and his friends did to that old van, the airbags didn't work very well (yet); and to add a little more paranoia to this matter, on the Sunday's afternoon, initially, many unknown rich kids' cars showed up at the neighbors' house, and we didn't know why, but I guess dad got tired of our little self-confinement (even if it was less than twenty-four hours) and went to sacrifice himself (and out to show off his red baby as he usually does, anywhere), under the excuse of buying something to eat more than all those pizzas, although the "opportunity" to share one of all those boxes was close. I went out for a moment with Jackie to our new backyard to see if it was suitable for doing some yoga, since the spare room would be taken up by all of Dad's manly things, but I couldn't concentrate because I could hear an upbeat electronic music coming from the backyard of the house next door, and I looked over the fence to see that it was a pool party.
It was full of cute guys jumping off from trampolines and girls in bikinis drinking beer, among which were the blonde from the other night, and her two friends, and the less cool guys were in the corner of the pool smoking (and I don't need to be too smart to know that they were smoking); It would have been incredible to be able to bring them one of our pizzas and introduce myself as the new neighbor, since I knew they probably would be my schoolmates, but I had already seen many kids like them in Boston' schools, I already knew those spoiled children, besides, that party seemed to be illegal in many ways... And I was right. As soon as the first one who looked like a "responsible adult" appeared there, I hid my head under the fence and went inside as discreetly as I could, when we entered, Dad was already home, he was putting the food in the refrigerator.
-Hi, honey-.
-Oh, hi, Dad-. I said, catching my breath, I had run across the yard before anyone saw me.
Jackie had gotten tired too and sat down on his cushion.
-Apparently there is some kind of party next door-.
-A pool party-. I whispered
-What?-. .
-Nothing-. I said smiling to hide the awkwardness. Dad didn't really mind me going to parties, he only cared when the parties were thrown without permission, and with some forbidden things in them, and from what could be heard from our house, whoever organized that party was in a big trouble.I looked at him hoping he would remember the time he and mom told me we were moving to Los Angeles, they promised me that I would be able to go out more than they let me go out at home, and they also trusted me a lot for the way I had taken care of Jackie. I guess I already showed them that I knew how to take care of myself, but Dad hadn't given me a real opportunity to see him, since he always watched me at school, in his free time, and he knew how much he could bother me.
-Maybe you can go to the next party, first you should get to know those guys very well-. He knew those spoiled children better than anyone, he had been dealing with them daily for quite some time. For that same reason, it seemed strange to me that he would suggest that, especially with only two days in California.
-Are you serious?-.
He just nodded his head silently, but I knew that a proposal as good as that hid something that I disliked.
-But...?-.
-I will take you to school tomorrow in my car-.
As for transportation, I really liked being independent, I thought they had noticed, but I think the only one who did that was my mom, since it was her idea to give me that old van.
-What? Why?-.
-What's wrong with it?-.
-Absolutely nothing, but I thought I could...-.
-It's just because it's the first day, after that I might let you go in the van, I just want to see how they drive there-.
I didn't mind going with dad in his car, but it was literally an "old-mobile", I didn't think it would make a "good first impression" with the people here, and I know that my van wasn't the best thing about the best, but I liked that he was different from the others, also I didn't want the others to see me arrive on the first day with a new teacher, I didn't want to look like a "pet", I was worried that they would bother me for that, and I already saw to many idiots in the neighbors' yard, idiots who will surely be my new schoolmates.
-Sweetheart, it's only for one day, if it turns out to be a good day for both of us, on Tuesday I will let you go in the van, I promise-.
-Fine, can I pretend I don't know you if they see us together?-.
He smiled at me and came up to hug me when we heard a noise from outside, Jackie became alert, and the three of us went to the entrance.
All those kids were quickly leaving the neighbor's house, a big boy (who I couldn't tell if he was drunk or high) was being escorted by his friend to his big black truck, at that moment he saw us, and shouted:
-Uh, new neighbors!-
while laughing and threw an empty beer can towards our flowers, that made dad angry.
-Hey!-
I knew that maybe that idiot deserved a beating, but I grabbed his hand and said:
-Please don't fight, just ignore him-.
Dad had promised, even before the air force, that he would only fight to protect his family, but from time to time, he would come across idiots like these scattered around, which, I think, made him lose his temper over something that happened to him at the high school, according to him, a story too long to tell.
While he was trying to calm down I heard him whisper:
-Jerk-.
The next day, Dad made me one of my favorite breakfasts, I guess as a good guarantee that he wouldn't embarrass me (or at least, not that day).
The West Valley High School was very big and beautiful, most of the students looked decent, until I saw my neighbor arrive along with that blonde and another girl, and they met with the idiot from yesterday and his friend at the door, I tried to hide in front of dad, I don't wanted him to get angry before his time, he would surely run into those kids in his class.
When dad parked his car in the driveway, I asked him in the nicest way I could at that moment:
-Daddy, could I come in first?-.
-Um, Yeah, sure-.
-Thank you-. I said, giving him a kiss on his scratchy cheek and whispering in his ear
-If I can't find someone to have lunch with, we could have lunch together-.
He looked confused.
-I thought you didn't want to be seen with me-.
-I know, but we could eat here-. normally I think I wouldn't have told him that, and, I know it sounded very hypocritical, but after seeing all those kids, I think we would both need it, an old habit that we had since I entered high school, and he got out of the air force.
-Of course we can- As a father, he looked satisfied.
-I love you so much-.
-I love you too-. I said as I put my backpack on my shoulder.
When among that small group he got lost among the others.
"Oh, Thank God," I thought; Although my relief didn't last that long, because in my first class there was that blonde in a cute yellow outfit worth about ten thousand dollars, putting on lipstick, with her two friends sitting at a table behind her. The stupid queen bee and her poor subjects; and I was right about "subjects" because almost at the back there were a couple of boys who were almost drooling over them.
The first torture of that day was when the teacher introduced me in front of the whole class, I insisted that she only call me "Ann", and she did, although adding my last name at the end, to which that stupid girl took the opportunity to tell her friends
-It sounds like McDonald's-.
and she made a gesture like she was going to vomit and was laughing at me while her friends looked at me with pity. The teacher simply ignored her.
Since I didn't want to get myself or Dad in trouble on my first day, I took it as a "beginner's joke" as I had seen before, and passed it off. I thought it would be the best for everyone.
The respective class passed calmly, from time to time, I looked at those girls out of the corner of my eye, and I noticed that the two in the back were also looking at me.
When it finally finished, one of them approached me, while the other two left.
-Hi-. she told me with a sweet smile.
-Hi-. I said, putting my things in my backpack.
-I just wanted to apologize for what Yasmine said-. "Yasmine", so that's what her name was. I suddenly, a bit of nostalgia invaded me, when I remembered my great-grandmother, and how she taught me how to take care of those types of flowers, although, of course, this "Yasmine" could only be one of those plastic flowers.
I sighed and said:
-No problem-. I said forcing my best fake smile at her.
-She can be very sweet when you meet her-. From her tone, it seemed to be a lie, but I already knew from the first moment that she was not going to be my friend, and that she was not going to belong to that little group, and that was perfectly fine.
-Look, I'm fine, really, but thank you, anyway-.
I said, trying not to sound ungrateful.
-I'm Sam-. she introduced herself, offering me her hand to shake.-You must be the new one on my neighborhood, the one who moved into Mrs. Pierce's house-.
-yes, i have seen you before, it's a pleasure, and Louisa... Um, Mrs. Pierce is my great-grandmother, so...-.
-Sam!-. Yasmine shouted from the door.
-I think your friends are waiting for you-.
-Yes, I'm sorry, I'll see you later," he said, waving goodbye.
-See ya...-.
