Lilly
I thought I was dead and would see Elijah the last time as he knelt before me. My ears were ringing and I couldn't hear clearly at first. I wasn't dead, but I felt like it.
As we drove back home, I sat curled up on the back seat of the SUV. Elijah sat next to me and held me in his arms. Nobody said a word; we all just thought about Duke. If he dies, it will be because of me, and the weight of these thoughts would kill me inside. The images before my eyes of these men beating Duke again and again jumped out at me, and I put my face in my hands and sobbed. Elijah said nothing; he just hugged me tightly and kissed my forehead.
The whole community had a hard time after I came back. Evelyn had a heart attack after she found out about Duke and was treated in the hospital. Even John didn't seem to be doing well, which I understood. It was their son who was around, Life was fighting, and it was my fault. All the Ol' Ladies were by my side, supportive and caring. But I couldn't look Alice in the eyes. I felt bad even though she kept repeating to me that it wasn't my fault and that it would have happened even if he hadn't been there. She was probably right, but my conscience wouldn't let me breathe.
Ivy seemed to have taken the whole excitement so hard that she went into labor earlier than expected. This day will be remembered by all of us. Evelyn in the hospital, John in Doc's clinic, all the bikers suffering badly around Duke, and the Ol' Ladies worried about the whole community. I can only imagine how King is feeling, his brother fighting for his life, his parents badly hit, and his child on the way.
I sat in the clinic after Doc examined me and listened to him talking to Ace and telling him all this.
"I want to help," I said quietly as I sat up and looked at Elijah from me to Doc."No, Lilly...you need to rest and come to," Doc replied, but I shook my head.
"I want to do something...help..." I repeated my words, and Doc looked from me to Elijah. The only thing Doc did was get Emily to talk to me. And one sedative shot later, I was deep in sleep.
I don't know how long I was away, but when I came to, I was lying in Elijah's bed. He was sitting on an armchair next to the bed and staring out the window when I woke up. His face was worried, and he seemed to have not slept for a long time.
"Elijah," I said quietly, and his head immediately turned to me, and he smiled at me.
"I'm here Kitten," he answered as he came from the chair to the bed and sat down next to me.
As I leaned my head against his chest, he took a deep breath and hugged me to him.
"What's new?" I asked worriedly.
"Duke is still being treated...Doc says he's still critical. He survived the first 24 hours. That was the worst," Elijah said quietly.
"24 hours?" I asked him, disturbed.
"Yes, Kitten, you were gone for a whole day," he replied.
"What about Ivy?" I asked worriedly as I sat up and looked at him.
"Your sister gave birth to her son a few hours ago. He was born prematurely, that's why he's in the intensive care unit," he said, to which I put my hands over my mouth.
My sobs came on their own as I gasped for air and Elijah pulled me close.
"They'll all make it, Kitten. That's the James genes," he said, more to himself than he intended to me.
"I have to go to my sister," I said to him, and he looked at me and nodded.
"I know, Kitten...She's very worried about you," he said. Worried about me...I swallowed hard. Ivy had her son who is now in a glass box, and she is worried about me.
