A few days had passed since my unfortunate accident at the market, and things had been going well. I haven't run into any problems just yet. I've been staying at the castle more often than not, mainly due to Kurisa's begging to attend the year's galas.
It is also my duty as a female guard, I've been expected to blend into the crowd and protect the nobles from any suspicious activity. I would blend right in and most of the time people don't tend to guard their words against a noble lady, thinking they can't be overheard. I've stopped a few murder attempts and locked up at least five noblemen.
It's Springtime and the tradition is that at least two nobles must get married each spring to ensure prosperity to the kingdom, so the Queen likes to hold galas to ensure the marriage and courting of at least one couple to ensure this tradition. I never cared much for it, but Kurisa was expected to attend, on account of her sister becoming royalty after having married into the royal family. "Come on Winter! We have to get going!" Kurisa was adjusting an exquisite hairpin into her hair as I was slipping into some very uncomfortable heeled boots. I'd already strapped myself up with my weapons, and while I was expected to act as a hidden guard, I also did so because of Kurisa. I could've spent the night on watch on the sidelines, but Kurisa gives me strength to act the part of a noblewoman and deal with the pointless chatter of them.
I groaned slightly for having to deal with her, but she is my weakness. If not for her I wouldn't have security as a Dragon Native, they've been persecuted for the past ten years or so, and while the kingdom of Gordina is relatively safe, there are still some very hateful people who will stop at no cost to murder us. Even if I suffer from amnesia I know that I am from Wildspire, my white hair and ice blue eyes give me away. If not my appearance, the blood that flows through my veins is a clear sign, I'm gifted, (even if I myself see it as a curse) with the poison is a clear sign of magic, and only those from Wildspire hold magic. Some say it was gifted to them by their dragons.
As I finished lacing up the boots Kurisa turned around to face me and smiled softly, "Oh darling, you're beautiful."
I smiled back at her, "Of course you think that, you dressed me up. But thank you, if only I was as pretty as you." I meant every word of that, my best friend chose a light blue gown that was simple but really complimented her blue black hair, she had added some sort of kohl to accentuate her upturned eyes a clear sign that she was of western decent. I loved how she never was scared of her heritage, if only I could do the same.
She looped her arm around mine and pulled me toward a mirror, "Look at us, all dolled up for a gala we don't want to participate in." I laughed with her and suddenly felt much lighter than I had in days, my face had cleared up from the puffiness of breaking my nose, and the makeup magic that Kurisa had done to my face made the bruising disappear.
I gave her a kiss on her hair, "What would I do without you Kurisa?"
She smiled and started walking us toward the door, "I think you would up and die." She giggled, "I would kick the bucket too without you."
When we arrived at the ballroom, Kurisa and I exchanged pleasantries with nobles and minded our manners, and whenever a man started looking at my best friend with more than just admiration I would glare at him until he would walk away. Kurisa would do the same whenever some one would do the same to me. We both weren't interested in finding a partner just yet, we had each other, that was enough.
I was just glaring at a man when I heard a familiar deep voice, "Kurisa! Winter! I'm glad you made it, I was just starting to get bored out of my mind."
I smiled and turned to the youngest prince of Gordina, and found him walking over to us with a cheeky grin on his face. "Nice to see you too, Kovan." Kurisa said after flashing him a smile.
