Long ago, in the Kingdom of Silla, there was rumored to have been a woman so beautiful that princes of many kingdoms all wagered and fought for her hand. Skin so lovely and fair that a simple touch upon its surface would send a poor soul to the heavens. Eyes so enchanting that one look could entrap the soul. This woman was said to have been a celestial maiden sent from the Gods to test the willpower of man. Others called her a she-devil, for she managed to seduce every such man she encountered and they drifted further from righteousness in their pursuit of her. Of all the rumors and fables, she did have a name, a name as bewitching as she was. Liya.

Silla DynastyA boy, no more than 12 or 13 entered the royal palace. Next to him approached his father, Bae Pyoheung, an esteemed general in the King's army. Upon the throne sat a boy around the same age. Ruler of Silla, the newly inaugurated King was silent as they approached, soon drifting to the floor in a bow.
"Our gracious King," The two greeted. The sharp eyes of the Queen Regent, his mother, watched their every move.
"What is the reason for this audience?" She asked with a deceptively calm and quiet disposition.
"I, Bae Pyoheung, dare to bring to you this day my son, Bae Seokheung, in hopes that he would one day have the honor to serve you as I have." The woman and the boy looked upon him and at the probing eyes felt the back of his neck and palms grow cool with sweat.
"Lift your gaze." The boy did at once.
"Perhaps he would be a suitable companion for the King." A click of the tongue signaled approval and the two hunched forms made themselves even smaller at once, faces pressed against the ground.
"You are most kind, Great Ruler. This boy shall gladly dedicate his life to you."***
Dedicate his life he did. He considered it an honor and privilege to be at the King's side. At the age of 15 phases, he had established a promising military career, much to the pleasure of his father. Exceptional with sword, bow and arrow and on horseback, he quickly defeated the other aspiring soldiers in his class. It seemed heaven's will for him to inherit his father's former glory and continue their legacy.
Stationed at the front lines, he defended against invader, foe and threat for five years. Rational, cold and calculating, Bae Seokhyeung was hailed the 'Icy Tiger of Death'. Tales of his great achievements spread through the royal courts and greatly impressed the King, whom he had sworn his utmost allegiance. Upon his return at now 20 phases, he was thrown a grand banquet and promoted. Allowed three requests, the first two were approved without much resistance. His first was to return for a time to his childhood home. The second was to be permitted an extended leave. The third shocked them all and as soon as the words left his mouth, immediately the King's interest grew. I wish to be permitted to marry.

The sound of hoofs cut through the otherwise silence of the morning. Word had travelled but as of yet no such proof had been given. So, battered coppery hands continued to set up a stand, a routine that had for so many years become like second nature. Placing the newest arrivals on display, the old hands only ceased when the hoofs stopped behind him and the push of air out of the nostrils of the beast alerted him of its presence. Standing straight from having been hunched, he turned to see that the word had indeed proven true.
"Nephew." Warm friendly eyes glanced down at him from where he sat and he, dressed in all of his splendor, replied with a voice so different from the one he remembered.
"Uncle." Returning his smile, he for a moment felt as a father would have a son returned home from battle.
"You've come home."
"For a while yet, yes." The stark depth of his voice shocked him and he made no attempt to hide his wonder. The young boy with the fat of youth still in his cheeks had left and a handsome strapping man had returned. Chest full of pride, he smiled, teeth shining now.
"My daughter prayed for you to return and now you have." His eyes softened and so did his face.
"Is she near?"
"There." Eyes following the pointed finger, the young man dismounted from his horse and with a bow of farewell and respect, went in the aforementioned direction.
