After refusing a ride from my sister back home, I sigh. Deciding to go back into the Cafe and buy a drink, I start to walk back. Before I reach the door, a bright sign catches my eye, taped to the brick wall outside of the Cafe.

Are you interested in Space?

Have you ever wanted to know what it's like behind the scenes in the field of Astronomy?

NASA is announcing a trip for a week where you will learn more about the galaxy and the science behind it at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. All you need is an application of why you should be accepted submitted on NASA's home page, and bam! You're off to learn about space!

(Meals, flights, and rooms will be paid for)

Get ready to blast off!

At first, it just seemed like a regular poster, but the more I stare at it, a plan starts to form in my head.

Astronomy.

I like astronomy.

Kennedy Space Center.

Learn about astronomy.

I should apply to go there because I like astronomy.

Whoa, genius idea. I berated myself.

"Looks cool, doesn't it?" A voice appears out of nowhere, startling me from my thoughts. She looks about my age, and gives off the appearance of a rabid chipmunk. With short light brown hair and bright blue eyes, it seemed as if she was chipper every single second of every single minute of every single hour. "I was thinking about joining, but I'll definitely need someone I know there, and none of my friends want to join me," she pouts, but then her eyes light up as she smiles. "I know!" She grabs my hand. "Will you apply? You seem interested, right? I mean, you might not be you might just be looking at the poster, or maybe you were looking at another poster and I caught you off guard?" She stammers.

Without me trying, a smile naturally appears on my lips. "Nope, I was looking at that poster, and yeah, I was planning on joining!"

She squeals in excitement. "Oh, I can't wait for the trip! I've already submitted my application, and all I have to do is wait for the results!"

A wave of reality washes through me. I would have to apply for it. Of course I would, why wouldn't I?

But I've never been that unique, that special, and don't people only choose the people that stand out to them in applications?

So how would someone like me, get in?

"Do you know when the deadline is to apply?" I ask her curiously, trying to shake those thoughts out my head.

"Of course! May 18th!" She responds immediately.

"Annabelle!" Someone calls out from behind her. "We've got to go!" A girl with bright blue hair tied in a ponytail comes closer.

"Oops! That's my girlfriend! Well, before you go, can we exchange numbers? I'm Annabelle, as you heard, and who are you?"

She obviously seemed in a rush, and I didn't want to delay her further. All I could do was play along. "I'm Jane," I hand her my phone. "Here, you can type your contact in, and I'll text you if I have any questions about the trip."

Typing furiously, she throws the phone back to me, and I barely catch it. "I'm so sorry, I have a bit of a tight schedule, as you can see,"

Her girlfriend is now right next to her, with a murderous expression on her face.

"Come on!" Annabelle cheerfully grabs the sleeve of the blue-haired girl. "I'll talk to you later!" She shouts behind her back.

The girl gives me one last pointed look and leaves.

Now I stand there, mind racing with thoughts.

Would I be able to do it?

Would I be smart enough, would I be capable enough, would I be competent enough?

Most importantly, would others see me for who I am? There must be thousands of people applying, and who's to say that I'll get in?

So many people are much more passionate than me about this.

But I needed this.

I needed it to prove that I am capable to do something other than take a gap year.

And most importantly,

My mind flashes back to the chipmunk girl, and then, and then, Leon.

I had people now.

I had to prove to them that I was important enough to be friends with.

That I wouldn't waste their time.

As I clutch my phone tightly in my hand, I am filled with determination, as I look up to the pure blue sky, and promise to myself.

This is an opportunity that I won't let pass.
