The night before the first day of school for the Spring semester, Zoe was wide awake much later than she should've been, though not for lack of trying. The clock on her nightstand read 11:37, and she groaned in annoyance at how sleep kept evading her. Deciding to give up on sleep for now, the brunette teen threw her covers off her body and let her feet hit the cold hardwood floor. She let out an exhausted breath, she hated the nights where she couldn't sleep. Her feet shuffled across the floor and out into the hallway. She kept the lights off, moving expertly through the dark hall and down the stairs.
She rummaged through the kitchen cabinets for a minute before finding what she was looking for: sleeping pills. That always does the trick. As she washed the pill down, her gaze traveled out the window over the sink, the darkness of the Beacon Hills Preserve looming from just past her backyard. She hated the preserve at night. She hated it at all times, actually, but it was worst at night. The trees were thick and seemingly endless, making everything practically pitch black and ominous. She tried to avoid the woods at all costs, which was easier said than done considering she lived by its edge. As she stared out into the night, she thought she saw lights shining from deep within the trees, but maybe that was just the sleeping pills taking over.
Shaking her head, Zoe made her way back towards the stairs. She faltered on the bottom step, her eyes catching on an old family photo from years ago. She was probably seven in the picture, her gap tooth smile wide and blinding. Behind her were her parents, years younger both physically and emotionally. Next to zoe was her sister. She was a middle-schooler at the time, smack dab in the middle of her awkward phase. She had bright green braces and this was one of the few times that year she had even allowed her picture to be taken. The entire year of 2002, Zoe could count on one hand the number of pictures that existed of her sister. She couldn't decide if that was a good or bad thing, every time she saw a picture of her everything hurt all over again.
Tearing her eyes away from the family photo, she crept back up the stairs and through the silent hallways, trying her best to be quiet, as if her parents would even care. By the time her head hit her pillow the sleeping pills were taking over, and the last thing she saw before she finally fell asleep was the image of her sister at the edge of the forest, beckoning Zoe to follow her.

Zoe swiped one last layer of gloss over her lips, ignoring the incessant honking coming from her best friends' car waiting in the driveway. Finally satisfied with how she looked, she grabbed her bag and sauntered out the front door, Lydia laying off the horn at the sight of her.
"What took you so long?," Lydia grumbled as Zoe slid into the passenger seat, "We're totally going to be late."
"We are not," She laughed, "Plus, beauty takes time."
"Well you better hope it was worth it, because if we're late on the first day back i'm going to kill you, and then you'll look like this forever."
Zoe smirked at herself in the side mirror, "I think this is an acceptable death look, don't you?"
Lydia rolled her eyes before turning her attention back to the road, the girls falling into a comfortable silence on the drive to school, interrupted only by the faint sounds of the radio or idle gossip from winter break.
