--
I jump down the stairs; excitement fills my heart. Trash is hot on my tail as I round the corner to the kitchen. I see Stephen pouring coffee from the coffee pot into his blue University of Columbia mug when I enter. He's wearing grey joggers and an old black t-shirt. He looks good in anything he wears.
"Good morning, Steph!" I exclaim with happiness, jumping up on one of the barstools. He looks at me with a slight smile.
"Good morning, kid. You sleep well last night?" he asks. I nod.
"Yep, I slept pretty good. How about you? You get some rest?" I question. I ask him that every morning wanting him to update me about his rest and nightmares. He lets out a big sigh.
"Yeah, I got a little bit. Not as much as I wanted, but enough to get me through the day," he replies, taking a sip of his black coffee. I smile, trying to be positive of his slow progress. But at least he's able sleep for more than an hour without waking up from the horrors that haunt him.
"That's great! I'm so happy you go some rest!" I declare. Stephen gives a quiet chuckle.
"You want some coffee?" he asks, pointing to the coffee machine. I shake my head.
"I'm all good. Thanks though!" I tell him.
"What's got you into such a chipper mood?" he inquires.
"Why aren't you in a good mood?" I question with a giggle. He gives me a confused look.
"Is there a reason I should be happier than usual?" he asks suspiciously. I roll my eyes.
"It's your birthday tomorrow, dummy. Usually, I don't know, people are excited for their birthday," I explain. He gives a slight smile.
"Yes, it is, huh? I assume I'm a little excited," he tells me.
"Well, you should be. It's going to be a great day. I can promise you that," I say with excitement. He lets out a sigh.
"I hope you're not going to do too much, y/n. I don't need a lot. I'm only turning 38. It's not that big of a deal," he explains.
"So?? It's still a birthday. Two more years until 40 and then ten more years until 50. Over the hill-" I play with him. He holds a hand up.
"Okay, okay. Let's not age me up now. I may not be mentally 38, but I'm going to keep this body in this shape for as long as I can," he interrupts.
"Yeah, you should because it's a good body," I retort. He looks at me with wide eyes and then a snarky grin.
"So, you like my body? Huh, y/n?" he asks sheepishly. My face automatically goes hot. Shit. I shouldn't have said that. How am I going to dig myself out of this one?
"I meant, ummm that you look really good. Like really good. And you are probably going to look amazing when you're 50 as well," I try to explain, but I know I just dug the hole even deeper. Stephen's face goes red for a few seconds, and then he swallows. He gives a quick chuckle.
"Well, I appreciate it, y/n. And right back at you. I'll make sure Christine doesn't find out you said that," he tells me, taking another sip of my coffee. I swallow the lump in my throat and push down my feelings.
