As tonight's frat party was nearing, i made sure to immerse myself into all my studying time earlier than usual.
I was so focused in, i didn't even hear someone knocking and yelling through the door numerous times.
I finally hopped out of my seat at the dining table and proceeded to answer the door.
It was Zaina!
Zaina was one of the foreign exchange students at our college.
She was from Saudi Arabia and had to transfer schools due to immigration reasons.
Her family couldn't afford her education and it was difficult because her father had worked a low-paying job and her mother tried to consider getting a job to help him out, but Zaina's 5 other siblings were her mother's priority.
So that's why they all immigrated to the U.S. so that Zaina could have a better education and possibly a better future. We're also good friends too!
Zaina wore a floral hijab with a floral dress to match.
"Oh my god, Zaina, i'm so sorry." I quickly apologized.
"I was studying and i--"
She raised a hand at me, politely cutting me off. "Seriously, it's fine. I just wished you would've answered at the first knock."
"Right." I chuckled awkwardly, then stepped aside to let her through.
She smiled and walked in, right past me. I shut the door, then turned to her and said, "Sorry, i just haven't been with it today. I didn't even make it to the first class today... i feel disoriented."
Zaina gave me an understanding nod as she made me feel a tad bit better by saying, "It's totally normal, Lia. I mean, we all have one of those days, right?"
"Meh, i guess." I replied as i flashed her a pleasant smile. "You want somethin' to eat or drink?" I asked as i made my way back over to the kitchen.
She politely replied, "No thanks, um..." She paused for a moment, seeming hesitant to say more. "I... I actually don't think i'm gonna be able to make it to the party tonight."
I quickly whipped around to face her and yelled, "WHAT?!" Did she just say what i think she said?!
"C'mon, Analia, you heard me. I'm not going and that's final. Plus, i have Quran readings every Thursday and you know that!", said Zaina, reminding me as if i keep up with her routine.
"But it's just one night! Can't you at least allow yourself to have some fun? Have a good time maybe?" I said with an upsetting frown on my face.
"Says the one who never takes the time out for anything else except reading and studying.", snapped Zaina.
She did have a point, but it doesn't matter. I just didn't understand why she feels the need to stick to her Thursday night routine.
Shit, even I'M trying to study earlier than usual!
I then replied in a gentle voice, trying to avoid conflict. "You know what, fuck it. It's no point in trying to talk you into coming. It's just..."
I sighed, pausing momentarily, then I finally let it out. "I don't want you to ever feel excluded, Zai. You're always welcome in our circle."
I flashed her a reassuring smile as she pressed her lips together in appreciation.
After watching me resume my studying for about half an hour as if something was on her mind, Zaina finally said, "Y'know, you're not wrong, Analia."
