It came again, in my dream. That blazing heat in the ice cold lake, burning around me, but it had a familiar feel, almost welcoming.
I woke up with dark circles around my eyes again and my head buzzing, cold sweat all over my body. I begged my brother to let me skip school today. God, I hated that school. What was even the point in going to such a school where all the teachers ever even do is make us read aloud, ask us why we handed our assignment 5 minutes due the deadline and give us detention for breaking the school's dress code...
However, as much as I hated the school, unusual stuff had been happening all over it for the past few weeks which caught my attention and interest. Men in odd uniforms often visited the school, made inspections of it, took surveys etc. And then they injected us with a serum calling it vaccine for a seasonal flu- yeah. Whatever the reason for all this, something was definitely off.
Ever since they injected me with the serum like the rest of my friends and basically the entire school, I had been severing through recurring headaches, my body temperature would rise up to a 115 degree Celsius and I'd often feel nauseous.
It wasn't just me, the entire school felt this, and almost nobody came to school anymore. The only reason I came to school today was my brother and his strict rules. Apparently my grades are more important to him than my health.
However, I did not know of what might await me when I arrive at school. As soon as I reached and entered through the gates, two of the same men in the unusual uniforms suddenly grabbed me by my arms and led me through a passageway in the school that I had never seen before. I struggled to let myself free, but their grip was tough, so much so that my arms had started to hurt. I called out to my best friend Piper and saw that she was right beside me, also in the grips of the men in uniforms.
Shivers ran down my back. I had stopped struggling and now noticed that the passageway had got extremely dark. Sweat started beading on my face. When the passage finally ended, I saw that Piper had a big bruise on her face and her lip was bleeding. Dear God, did they hit her while she struggled to let herself free?
We entered in a big hall and saw multiple students lining the walls, quivering with fear. What were they going to do to us? Finally they let us go and threw us in seats. They told the other students to sit down as well.
"Piper, are you alright?"
She breathed heavily and gasped "What's happening? What are they doing to us?"
Her voice was frantic, panicked.
"Don't know, just hope for the best." I replied.
Soon I saw men in different clothing approaching us. They held a strange sort of gun in their hands. That's when it hit me, the guns had the same serum they dosed us with a week ago. My headaches were finally getting better; I didn't want to go through them again.
I didn't want to stay quiet, I never did. But when I tried to speak, my voice came out hoarse, almost silent.
The men with the serums approached us and told us to keep still. The men gripped us again. I took a deep breath. Piper was still right beside me, I felt for her hand, because I had closed my eyes in fear. But before I could even move my hand, I felt a piercing hot pain in my left arm and my body went completely numb. I fell unconscious as darkness obscured my vision.
I was in the lake again; heat burning my body, but I still sensed ease with it, a comfort.
I woke up somewhere else, swarmed by people in the same uniform, some younger than me, some older, and not only men, but women too. I looked around for piper, but she was nowhere to be seen.
