She was praying that this corset suffocated and killed her before her mother returned back to the room. Death, please save her from the humiliation and torment she's about to endure.
Her eyes were closed shut and her mind focused on controlling her breathing, or rather reducing her breathing. She would inhale and hold it, trying to see how long she could go without air. She would always eventually exhale, but this time she was pretty close to passing out from holding back her breathing. Please let her faint and wake back up in New York.
The sound of the door opening made her exhale. "Here, I found it." Her mother rejoiced and Scarlett opened her eyes to look directly in the mirror, seeing her mother approaching her from behind with a hair-clip in her hand.
Florence Forbes insisted she be the one to help Scarlett get ready for the big day, rather than the lady maids that came along with marrying a Lord.
"Scarlett was trying to off herself." Marjorie spoke from the window seat of Scarlett's room.
Her mother's eyes darted to meet Scarlett's in the mirror. Before her mother could even say anything, Scarlett's mouth opened. "Why do I have to do this? It's so unlike me."
"And why isn't Marjorie going out... into society? She's only three years younger." Vincent jumped into the conversation from where he sat on the bench at the end of Scarlett's bed.
"Because mother loves me." Marjorie snickered.
If looks could kill, her sister would be dead. "Will you shut up?" Scarlett snapped.
"Hey!" Florence scowled her daughter, trying to put all her focus on making sure Scarlett's hair was perfect and not the fighting of her children. "Marjorie will have to do this next year."
"I was just cursed as the eldest, that's all." Scarlett winced when she felt the hair-clip stab her in the back of the head. "Ow!"
Her mother muttered out an apology and turned to retrieve the feather that was waiting patiently on the vanity. Scarlett adjusted her body to where she was no longer facing the mirror, and instead facing her mother.
"I know this is not what you are used to. And it is not like you. This isn't New York, but you are one and twenty, it is time for you to find a husband whether you want one or not."
